Hempstead, NY – Hofstra senior
Madison Warfel scored twice in the second half and freshman
Merlijn van der Vegt recorded 10 saves to lead the Pride to their second consecutive victory with a 3-2 decision over the Bobcats of Quinnipiac at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Monday afternoon.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Bobcats (1-4) got on the board just 59 seconds into the second quarter off a penalty corner as graduate-student Bianka Strubbe fired a shot that beat van der Vegt inside the left post. Valerie Perkins, who inserted, and senior Inez Ruiz-Martinez, who stopped the ball, picked up assists on the goal. The score remained at 1-0 the rest of the half as the Hofstra goalie made four of her saves in the second to keep the Pride within one goal.
Warfel tied the contest 3:21 into the third quarter on a great individual effort inside the circle for her first goal of the season. Hofstra took the lead at the 40:34 mark on a penalty stroke after the Quinnipiac goalie Hedda Bierman-Ratjen covered the ball. Pride sophomore
Cami Larsson converted the penalty stroke to give Hofstra a 2-1 advantage.
The Pride (2-4) gave themselves some much-needed breathing room just 5:14 into the fourth quarter when senior
Alyssa Kohler, near the middle of the circle, sent a tip pass to Warfel closer to goal. Warfel one-timed the shot inside the post for a 3-2 lead.
Quinnipiac put the pressure on the Pride in the final six minutes and closed to 3-2 off another penalty corner with Strubbe scoring from the top of the circle on assists from Perkins and Ruiz-Martinez at the 53:57 mark. The Bobcats kept the pressure on but van der Vegt made three big saves for Hofstra in the fourth quarter to post the victory.
Hofstra will take to the road for the first time this season on Friday, September 20 when the Pride face Bryant at Brown University at 4 p.m.
