Hempstead, NY – Hofstra sophomore
Cami Larsson scored the Pride's first goal of the season but Hofstra ran into a buzz saw in the name of 17
th-ranked Saint Joseph's as the Hawks posted a 9-1 victory over the Pride at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Hawks of Saint Joseph's, who posted an 18-3 record and a trip to the NCAA Championship Tournament last season, picked up where they left off last season in Sunday's 2019 season opener, scoring four goals in the first quarter. Sophomore Tonya Botherway tallied the first two SJU goals before senior Emily Sayre and junior Jordan Olenginski added to the lead. Senior Pepa Serrano boosted the lead to 5-0 just 3:05 into the second quarter.
The Pride got on the board at the 25:15 mark of the half on the penalty stroke by Larsson, after senior
Madison Warfel was fouled in the circle. Larsson beat SJU senior goalie Victoria Kammerinke high to put Hofstra on the board.
Saint Joseph's would add two goals in both the third and fourth quarters including the completion of the hat-trick by Botherway in the third quarter. Botherway would finish with three goals while Serrano finished with one goal and two assists.
