FH: Hofstra Falls To Wagner In The Season Opener

Hempstead, NY – The visiting Seahawks of Wagner spoiled the head coaching debut of Hofstra Head Field Hockey Courtney Veinotte with a 3-0 decision over the Pride in the season opener for both teams at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Friday afternoon. It was the first field hockey game in program history for the Seahawks.

Outshooting the Seahawks, 14-11 in the contest, the Pride found themselves down 1-0 on the first of two goals by Wagner freshman Kira Mordvinov on a deflection of a shot by Gabrielle Dudek just 4:50 into the first quarter. Despite getting a total of eight shots and three penalty corners in the first two quarters, the Pride couldn't get a shot past goalie Annabel Zandvoort as the graduate-student made three of her six saves in the first half.

Wagner boosted the lead to 2-0 with 2:44 to play in the third quarter as Mordvinov picked up a loose ball and deposited it behind Hofstra goalie Cecelia DeSimone. Wagner freshman Hannah Meyer closed out the scoring with 4:23 to play in the fourth quarter as the German took a pass from classmate Joy Muller just inside the circle and blasted a waist-high shot into the netting of the goal.

The Pride had their best scoring opportunity early in the fourth quarter when a Hofstra shot trickled behind Wagner's substitute goalie Justin van Spengler only to be swept away by junior Grace Gibson for a defensive save.

Hofstra returns to action on Sunday, September 1 when they entertain the 17th-ranked Hawks of Saint Joseph's at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Game time is 2 p.m.
