Ryan Rue and
Andrew Mundy combined to limit Elon to one run on eight hits as Hofstra won the second game of a doubleheader, 4-1, Saturday evening at University Field. The Phoenix took advantage of four Pride errors in game one, scoring seven unearned runs in a 7-0 victory.
Rue (3-4) threw six shutout innings and recorded six strikeouts before yielding to Mundy, who went the final three innings and allowed a ninth-inning run to earn his third save of the season.
Hofstra scored single runs in the third, fourth, fifth, and eighth innings.
Austin Pollack doubled home
Tyler White, who also doubled, in the third to give the Pride a 1-0 lead.
Rob Weissheier doubled to lead off the fourth and came home on
Austin Gauthier's single to give Hofstra a 2-0 advantage.
Vito Friscia made it a 3-0 game in the fifth with an RBI double that drove in Pollack from first. Weissheier would close the scoring with a solo home run to lead off the eighth. It was his sixth home run of the season.
Nick Cicci drove in Elon's run in the ninth with a groundout after the Phoenix put runners on second and third with one out. Jared Wetherbee (6-4) took the loss after allowing three runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings. He did record 10 strikeouts.
Pollack and Weissheier each had two hits in the contest for the Pride.
George Kirby (8-1), the 20th-ranked MLB Draft prospect, shut the Pride down for six innings in the opener. The junior allowed three hits and struck out 12 before Kyle Greenler pitched the final three innings for his second save.
Elon scored five runs in the third after a two-out error opened the flood gates. The Phoenix would score three runs on two bases loaded walks and a hit batsman, as well as another on a wild pitch. Elon would add two more unearned runs in the fourth after a throwing error allowed one run to score and another came in on a hit batter.
Adam Spurlin had two RBIs without recording a hit in the game, while Anthony Galaston had two hits and a pair of runs. Tyler Cranston recorded three hits as well for Elon.
Hofstra, which had six hits in the opening game, got two hits from Friscia.
Sean Flaherty had a double while
Alex Sica,
Ryan Morash and
Myles Mensah added singles.
Michael James (0-7) took the loss after allowing five unearned runs on two hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Hofstra moved to 14-28 overall and 7-11 in the CAA with the split. Elon slipped to 29-20 overall and 18-3 in league play. The loss snapped a 12-game conference winning streak for the Phoenix.
Hofstra returns to action Tuesday at LIU Brooklyn. Game time is 3 p.m.
