Hempstead, NY - Elon scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 6-3 lead and held off the Pride to post a victory by that score Friday evening at University Field. The Pride loaded the bases in the ninth with one out but did not score.
Hofstra falls to 13-27 on the season overall and 6-10 in Colonial Athletic Association play. The league-leading Phoenix improved to 28-19 overall and 17-2 in the CAA. It was Elon's 11th consecutive win in conference play.
The teams traded runs in the third with Elon scoring on a double play grounder, while
Rob Weissheier tied it up in the bottom of the frame with his fifth home run of the season.
The Pride took the lead in the fourth as
Anthony D'Onofrio reached on an error, stole second, went to third on a fly out and scored on a single from
Ryan Morash. Hofstra would tack on a third run in the fifth as
Sean Flaherty singled home
Austin Gauthier, who had reached on a fielder's choice and stole second.
But Elon would rally in the seventh, scoring five runs on four hits. Tyler Cranston singled to make it a 3-2 game before Tyler Stanley's two-run single gave the Phoenix the lead at 4-3. Cam Devanney capped the scoring with a two-run double to the gap in right-center.
The Pride, which stranded a season-high 14 runners, had chances to rally in the eighth and ninth. The Pride left two runners on in the eight and then loaded the bases against Elon closer Ty Adcock in the ninth. But Adcock, who struck out four batters in the inning, got the final two outs to escape the jam and preserve the Elon victory.
Jimmy Joyce (2-3) took the loss in relief for the Pride, allowing five runs on four hits in two innings of work.
Jack Jett started and allowed a run on three hits with five strikeouts and four walks in 4 1/3 innings.
Elon starter Kyle Brnovich (6-3) picked up the win, going six innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits. He also struck out eight. Brandon Justice followed with two scoreless frames before giving way to Adcock, who earned his eighth save.
The teams conclude the series Saturday with a doubleheader at 11 a.m.

Vito Friscia extended his hitting streak to six and his on-base streak to 22 with a 2-5 day.
-Weissheier snapped an 0-15 stretch with his home run and added a single in the seventh.

Seamus Brazill pitched the final 2 2/3 innings for the Pride and did not allow a hit or a run. He is unscored upon in his last four appearances and has not allowed an earned run in his last eight stints totaling 17 1/3 innings.

Austin Gauthier also had two hits for the Pride, which outhit the Phoenix (10-7).
