Harrisonburg, VA - Hofstra scored a season-best six runs in the first inning and went on to post a 10-5 victory over James Madison Sunday at Veterans Memorial Park. With the win, the Pride avoided a series sweep by the Dukes.
Hofstra moved to 13-26 on the season and 6-9 in the Colonial Athletic Association. James Madison slipped to 25-19 overall and 6-9 in league action.
The Pride sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning.
Ryan Morash had a leadoff single and
Vito Friscia followed with a two-run home run to left center. After a foul out,
Austin Gauthier and
Parker Quinn hit back-to-back singles. Following a failed double steal for the second out,
Kevin O'Connor doubled to right to knock in Quinn for a 3-0 lead.
Vinnie Costello followed with a double to left to make it 4-0 and
Tyler White homered, a two-run shot, to close out the scoring.
The Dukes scored three times in the first with Brady Harju contributing a two-run single. James Madison added two more runs in the second to cut the Pride lead to one. Kyle Novak and Matt Dipasupil had RBI singles in the inning.
The Pride would add a run in the fourth on Guathier's single to extend the lead to two, 7-5. Hofstra would close out the scoring in the seventh, scoring three times.
Sean Flaherty drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk, Morash added an RBI single, and a third came in on a wild pitch.
Jack Anderson (2-0), who pitched 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief, earned the win. The sophomore lefty allowed five hits and struck out five batters.
Joe Williams (1-3) took the loss for James Madison. The Dukes starter did not make it out of the first innings, allowing four runs on five hits in 2/3 of an inning.
Hofstra had four batters (Morash, Gauthier, Quinn, and O'Connor) record two hits in the game. Friscia and White each had a pair of RBIs.
Novak and Dipasupil had three hits each for the Dukes. Â
Hofstra returns to action Friday when it hosts CAA-leading Elon at 3 p.m. in the opening game of a three-game series.
Notes:
-Friscia's home run was his seventh of the season, matching his total from last season.
-White's home run was his first of the season and first since the 2017 season.
-James Madison left 14 runners on base.

Seamus Brazill went the final 2 2/3 innings and recorded five strikeouts.
