Harrisonburg, VA - Michael Morgan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning to give James Madison a 4-3 victory over Hofstra Saturday Night at Veterans Memorial Park. The Pride has tied the game at 3 in the top of the inning.
James Madison improved to 25-18 on the year and 6-8 in Colonial Athletic Association play with the win. Hofstra fell to 12-26 overall and 5-9 in league play.
James Madison loaded the bases in the ninth on an infield single, a double and an intentional walk that brought Morgan to the plate with two outs. On the sixth pitch of the at-bat, on a 2-2 count, Morgan was hit by a
Daniel Page offering to force in the winning run.
Ryan Morash has tied the game in the Hofstra half of the inning as he doubled in pinch-runner
Tyler White.
Hofstra took advantage of a James Madison miscue in the fifth to take a 1-0 lead.
Parker Quinn singles with two outs and came around to score on a three-base throwing error on Morash's grounder.
The Dukes would answer in the bottom of the frame as Kyle Hayes doubled and scored on Trevon Dabney's single.
Hofstra broke the tie in the sixth, loading the bases on a double from
Vito Friscia and walks to
Austin Gauthier and
Sean Flaherty.
Anthony D'Onofrio then drew a walk of his own to force in the go ahead run.
But James Madison tied the game in the bottom of the sixth as Kyle Novak and Morgan hit back-to-back doubles. The Dukes then went ahead in the eighth on a sacrifice fly.
Page (0-1) took the loss for the Pride after allowing a run on two hits in 1 1/3 innings of work. Friscia and Quinn each had two hits for Hofstra.
Matt Marsilli (2-0) picked up the win after getting the final out of the ninth inning. Novak and Morgan each had two hits for the Dukes with Morgan also driving in two runs.
The teams conclude the series Sunday with a 2 p.m. start.
