Newark, DE - Junior
Alyssa Parrella cemented herself as arguably the greatest to ever suit up for the Pride as she had six goals and one assist to break the program's all-time scoring mark in a 14-8 win for the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team over Delaware on Sunday afternoon at Raymond Field. Parrella now has 249 points in her career and passed Brittain Altomare (247 from 2012-15) for the program record. She also has 182 goals and is one shy of the program record of 183, currently held by Kathleen Mikowski (2000-03).
The victory clinches a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship for Hofstra, which improved to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in league action. Delaware fell to 7-9 and 1-4 with the loss.
Hofstra was held without a goal for the first four-plus minutes with the Blue Hens leading 1-0 before the Pride exploded for six straight goals to lead by five with 17:05 left in the opening stanza. Freshman
Erin Demek started the run and Parrella completed an early hat trick in the game with three during the huge run. A pair of goals from Sydney Rausa close the gap to 6-3, but the Pride got a pair of goals from junior
Alexa Mattera during a half-closing 4-1 run that pushed the advantage to six goals at the break.
Freshman
Amanda Guerra, who finished with a hat trick in the game, made it an 11-4 Hofstra lead early in the second stanza. The Blue Hens would never get closer than six the rest of the way as the Pride got second half goals from sophomore
Katie Whelan and Parrella (2), in addition to Guerra, to dominate Delaware.
Mattera had a strong game with the third of the three hat tricks for Hofstra, while also adding four draw controls and two ground balls. She was tied for team-high honors in draw controls with
Darcie Smith. Freshman
Jess Smith had nine saves for the Pride. Whelan tied her career-high with five points and established a new career-best with four assists.
Caroline Farley had three points on two goals and one assist, while also adding three draw controls for Delaware. Rausa and Claire D'Antonio each had a pair of goals for the Blue Hens.
Hofstra is back in action next Saturday when it travels to Drexel for its regular season finale. First draw control from Vidas Field is slated for 3 p.m. and the contest will be broadcast on the Lax Sports Network.
