WLAX: Hofstra Defeats Drexel; Parrella Breaks Goals Record

Philadelphia, PA - Freshman Erin Demek posted a game and season-high seven goals and junior Alyssa Parrella broke the program's career goals record as the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team rolled past Drexel, 19-11, on Saturday afternoon at Vidas Field. Parrella had seven points on four goals and three assists in the game. The seven goals by Demek are the most for a Pride freshman since Parrella tallied seven against Fairfield on February 25, 2017.

With her four goals in the game, Parrella now has 186 for her career, breaking the school record of 183, which was held by Kathleen Mikowski (2000-03). Parrella and junior Darcie Smith also broke CAA single season records in goals and draw controls, respectively.

Now with 100 points on the season (82 goals, 18 assists), Parrella is only the third player in Colonial Athletic Association history to reach the century mark in points for a season. She is the first since 2004 as Gail Decker of James Madison had 112 in 2004 and Suzanne Wosczyna of Old Dominion had 103 in 2002.

The win improves the Pride's record to 11-6 overall and 4-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Hofstra heads into CAA Championship play having won its last two games. Drexel sees its season come to an end with a record of 6-10 and 1-5 in the league. The 11 wins for the Pride are the most since the 2015 team won 11 games and the sixth-most in program history.

Hofstra jumped all over Drexel to start the contest as the Pride scored the first nine goals of the game with Parrella accounting for three and Demek adding a pair. The lead would be 12-3 at the break as Parrella and sophomore Arianna Esposito scored in the final seven minutes of the half, both off of assists from senior Jenna Budd, to give Hofstra the nine-goal halftime advantage.

The Dragons closed to within three goals in the second half, including at 13-10, as the Dragons had a pair of extended runs in the final 30 minutes. Demek would star in final 10 minutes, though, as she tallied four goals in a 5:18-span to give the Pride a commanding advantage en route to the eight-goal victory.

Sophomore Katie Whelan had a career-best five assists to go along with a goal to assist in the winning efforts. Budd had a career-high five points on two goals and a career-high three assists, while freshman Jess Smith had nine saves to earn the victory.

Hofstra will next be in action at the CAA Championship. The Pride will be the third seed in the tournament and take on second-seeded Towson on Friday night, May 3, at 7 p.m. The entire tournament will be played on the campus of James Madison in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Lax Sports Network will have coverage of both semifinals and the championship game on Sunday, May 5 at 12 p.m.
