BB: Weissheier Home Run Caps Ninth Inning Rally As Hofstra Sweeps UNCW

Hempstead, NY - Rob Weissheier's three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth capped a four-run rally and gave Hofstra a 9-8 victory over UNCW, completing a three-game sweep of the Seahawks. The walk-off home run for Weissheier came almost a year to the day of his three-run blast that completed a sweep of Charleston on April 22, 2018.

Hofstra, which has won a season-best five consecutive games, is now 11-24 on the season and 5-7 in Colonial Athletic Association play. The Seahawks have lost five games in a row and fell to 20-21 overall and 5-7 in league play.

Hofstra trailed 6-1 after 2 1/2 innings before getting back into the game with a four-run third. Ryan Morash and Austin Pollack had singles to start the inning and Vito Friscia delivered both runs with a single of his own. Weissheier followed with a double to send Friscia in from first base and make it 6-4. After a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout, Anthony D'Onofrio doubled to left to plate Weissheier with the fifth run.

That would be all the scoring for Hofstra until the ninth as UNCW reliever Blake Morgan kept the Pride in check over the next 5 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit and three base runners in total. The Seahawks would tack on a run in the fifth and a run in the eighth to go up, 8-5.

In the ninth, Jimmy Joyce led off with a sharp single to right center and that prompted a call to the bullpen for Henry Ryan. On his first pitch he induced a 5-4-3 double play but then gave up a single to Morash, hit Pollack and gave up an RBI single to Friscia that set the stage for Weissheier's heroics. The Pride junior took the first pitch he saw from Henry, a fastball, and deposited it over the left field fence for his fourth home run of the season and second of the series.

Seamus Brazill (1-0) earned the win with two innings of relief, allowing one hit with a strikeout. Jack Anderson pitched four innings of relief for the Pride and allowed a pair of runs while striking out six. Weissheier had two hits and four RBIs on the day, while Friscia added a pair of hits and three RBIs. Morash also chipped in two hits and scored twice.

Henry (3-3) took the loss after allowing four runs on three hits in 2/3 of an inning.

Greg Jones had four hits on the day for UNCW, while Noah Bridges added two hits and three RBIs. Kep Brown had a two-run home run for the Seahawks as well. Starting pitcher Landen Roupp lasted 2 2/3 innings and gave up five runs on five hits.

Hofstra will be in action Tuesday at Manhattan with a 5 p.m. game time.

Notes:
-The sweep marked the Pride's first-ever against UNCW.
-Pollack, who was on base four times via a hit, a walk and two hit by pitches, scored three runs for the Pride.
-Friscia extended his on-base streak to 17 games.
-Weissheier has a team-best nine multi-hit and seven multi-RBI games.
