Hempstead, NY -
Ryan Rue went six innings and the Hofstra offense scored in five consecutive innings as the Pride clinched a Colonial Athletic Association series win with a 6-4 victory Saturday evening at University Field.
The Pride (10-24, 4-7 CAA) put up runs in the third through seventh innings to erase an early 1-0 deficit and win for the fourth consecutive game.
UNCW (20-20, 5-6 CAA) put up a run in the second as Jackson Meadows singled, moved to second on a groundout and came in to score on Doug Angeli's single to right. The Pride tied it up in the third as
Rob Weissheier's single plated
Austin Pollack.
Hofstra took the lead for good with a two-run fourth.
Anthony D'Onofrio drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a single from
Jimmy Joyce. On a double steal attempt, UNCW threw the ball away to allow D'Onofrio to score the go-ahead run. Joyce would come home on a single from
Ryan Morash. The Pride would extend the lead to 4-1 in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from
Austin Gauthier that scored
Vito Friscia.
Greg Jones brought the Seahawks one run closer with a solo home run in the sixth, but Rue escaped a man on second with one out situation with a strikeout and a slow roller to second to limit the damage.
Parker Quinn hit his second home run of the season in the sixth to put the Pride back up by three, 5-2. Weissheier added his third home run of the year, a towering blast to center field, that made it 6-2 in the seventh.
The Seahawks got a pair of runs in the eighth off
Daniel Page as Riley Zayicek homered and Cole Weiss delivered an RBI triple. UNCW then had the tying run at the plate three times in the ninth against
Michael James, but the Hofstra left-hander got three straight fly outs to end the game and earn his first save of the season.
Rue (2-4) allowed two runs on just three hits and did not walk a batter in his outing. The freshman struck out five. Weissheier finished with two hits and two RBIs on the day.
Zarion Sharpe (0-2) started for UNCW and took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits over four innings.
The teams conclude the series Sunday with a 12 p.m. start.
