BB: Hofstra Shuts Out Manhattan In Home Opener

Hempstead, NY - Steven Boscia allowed three hits over six scoreless innings and Jack Jett closed out the game with three hitless frames as the Hofstra University Baseball team blanked Manhattan, 2-0, Tuesday afternoon in the Pride's home opener at University Field. The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Pride.

Hofstra got the only run it would need in the first without the benefit of a base hit, taking advantage of a pair of errors by Manhattan pitcher Nick Massa. Jimmy Joyce started things off with a one-out check swing roller to first that was fielded by Shawn Blake. He tossed to Massa covering but he missed the bag to allow Joyce to reach on the miscue. Massa later tried to pickoff Joyce at first, but his throw was errant, and Joyce hustled to third. After a walk to Vito Friscia put runners on the corners, Anthony
D'Onofrio lifted a sacrifice fly to center that allowed Joyce to score the first run.

That would be all the Pride would need as Boscia (1-0) and Jett were stellar on the mound. Boscia, a junior transfer from Lackawanna College who was making his first start after five relief appearances, allowed just three singles in his six innings and walked just one batter. He struck out a season-high five batters and threw 52 of his 78 pitches for strikes in picking up his first win in a Pride uniform. Jett, an Old Dominion transfer, came on in the seventh and allowed just two baserunners (an error and a walk) to notch his first career save.

Hofstra added an insurance run in the seventh as Sean Rausch walked, moved to second on an infield out and came in to score on Alex Sica's double to right.

Massa (0-1), who was making his first appearance of the season as he returns from injury, took the loss after allowing an unearned run in his one inning stint. Marc Galvan three six innings of relief and allowed three hits and one run. Teddy Sabato pitched a scoreless eighth inning, allowing one hit and striking out three batters.

The Pride moved to 4-18 with the win while Manhattan dropped to 8-19 with the loss.

Hofstra will host LIU Brooklyn Wednesday afternoon. First pitch at University Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
