Hempstead, NY - Freshmen
Anthony D'Onofrio,
Sean Flaherty, and
Ryan Morash combined for four hits and five RBIs and Hofstra pitching limited the Seahawks to two hits in a series-opening 7-3 victory Friday at University Field. Senior
Parker Quinn also contributed a pair of RBIs with a two-run single in the sixth inning.
Â
Hofstra, which won for the third consecutive game, improved to 9-24 on the season and 3-7 in Colonial Athletic Association play. UNCW suffered its third consecutive setback and slipped to 20-19 overall and 5-5 in the CAA.
Â
Morash opened the scoring in the third with his first home run of the season, a solo shot to left. The Pride tacked on a second run in the fourth as D'Onofrio doubled in Flaherty from first base. D'Onofrio would come through again in the sixth inning, after back-to-back walks, with an RBI double that plated
Austin Gauthier and sent Flaherty to third. Quinn followed with a hard single to right that got through a drawn in infield to score both runners and make it a 5-0 game.Â
Â
UNCW did not get its first hit until the seventh when Riley Zayicek led off with a double. The Seahawks would score twice that inning as after a walk to Greg Jones and two fielder's choices, Noah Bridges hit a two-run double to cut the Hofstra lead to three, 5-2.Â
Â
But Flaherty got the runs back for the Pride in the home half of the inning as walks to
Vito Friscia and
Rob Weissheier, followed by a balk put runners on second and third. The freshman lifted a double to right field that drove in both and gave Hofstra back a five-run cushion.Â
Â
The Seahawks loaded the bases on a walk and two hit batsmen in the ninth but came away with just one run as Kep Brown delivered a sacrifice fly.
Jack Anderson was able to strikeout the final two batters and record his first save.Â
Â
Jack Jett started for the Pride and did not allow a hit or a run over four-plus innings. He did walk five and struck out four.
Jimmy Joyce (2-2) pitched the next 2 2/3 innings and yielded the two runs on two hits and four walks. Anderson went the final 2 1/3 and allowed a run but no hits. He also had four strikeouts.
Â
Luke Gesell (4-3) took the loss for UNCW after allowing three runs on for hits in 5 1/3 innings of work.Â
Â
The teams continue the series Saturday with a 3 p.m. start.
