Piscataway, NJ –
Jimmy Joyce's bases-loaded double in the top of the sixth inning snapped a 2-2 tie and lifted Hofstra to a 6-4 victory over Rutgers Wednesday at Bainton Field. Hofstra would score five runs in the inning.
Hofstra improved to 8-24 with the win. Rutgers fell to 13-20
The Scarlet Knights put up two runs in the first inning off Pride starter
Steven Boscia. The Pride junior got the first two batters out before a walk to Tim Dezzi and a single by Chris Brito put runners on first and second. Carmen Sclafani followed with a single that plated one run and Luke Bowerbank delivered the second run with a single of his own.
Rutgers starter Jared Bellissimo kept Hofstra off the board until the fourth as
Austin Gauthier and
Anthony D'Onofrio had back-to-back doubles with the latter's hit driving in the Pride's first run of the day. Bellissimo went five innings and allowed the one run on two hits before yielding way to Parker Scott to start the sixth.
Scott walked
Austin Pollack to start the frame and after a sacrifice bunt from
Ryan Morash,
Vito Friscia singled to left centerfield to drive in the tying run. A walk and an error loaded the bases for Joyce and the Hofstra sophomore delivered a bases-clearing double to right center.
Alex Sica would drive in Joyce to make it a 6-2 game.
Boscia (2-0) went five innings and allowed two runs on five hits.
Seamus Brazill threw three innings and allowed two unearned runs before
Daniel Page shut the door in the ninth for his third save in as many chances.
Hofstra is back in action Friday when it begins a three-game series against UNCW.
