Bronx, NY - Fordham scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth and stranded Hofstra's tying run on third in the ninth as the Rams picked up a 4-3 victory Saturday at Houlihan Field.
Hofstra took a 1-0 lead in the second on a solo home run from
Vito Friscia. The Pride then went up 2-0 on
Vinnie Costello's solo shot in the fifth. The Rams would get on the board and pick up their first hit in the fifth. Jason Coules had a one out single and, after a walk, came into score on a throwing error on a double steal. Fordham would go ahead, 3-2, with a two-run seventh. The Rams loaded the bases before scoring on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch. Hofstra would load the bases in the eighth and tie the game on an RBI ground out from Friscia.
But the tie would not last long as Justin Bardwell led off the bottom of the inning with a single and Matt Tarabek followed with a double that scored pinch runner Jake Baker with what proved to be the winning run.
Hofstra got the tying run to third in the ninth as Costello led off with a single, stole second and went to third on a balk with two outs. But the Rams escaped the jam with a strikeout to preserve the win.
Freshman
Ryan Rue started for the Pride and allowed one unearned run on two hits over six innings.
Mike Mirando (0-1) took the loss after allowing the eighth inning run.
Kyle Martin (1-0) picked up the win, going the final 1 2/3 innings. He allowed one hit, no runs and struck out the side in the ninth.
Sean Rausch had two hits including a triple for the Pride.
Rob Weissheier and Costello also had a pair of hits.
Hofstra will be back in action Sunday at Fordham with a rescheduled game time of 2 p.m.
