BB: Hofstra Comes Up Short Against Iona

Bronx, NY - Iona scored the first three runs of the game and went on to post a 4-2 victory over Hofstra Friday at Fordham's Houlihan Field. Four Gales pitchers limited the Pride to four hits.
Iona won for the first time this season, moving its record to 1-10. Hofstra dropped to 2-7 on the year.

The Pride fell behind 2-0 in the third inning as the Gaels loaded the bases before Sam Punzi plated two runs with a ground rule double to left field. Iona added another run in the top of the fifth as Brian Picone led off with a triple and came home on a single from Fran Kinsey.

Hofstra would get on the board in the bottom of the frame on a bases loaded groundout from Vito Friscia that drove in Anthony D'Onofrio. But Iona got the run back in the sixth, as Jon Budesa had an RBI single. The Pride would close the scoring in their half of the inning as D'Onofrio singled in Austin Pollock, who had led off the inning with a hit by pitch.

Paul Sullivan (1-1), the first of three Iona relivers, earned the win after allowing a run on one hit with two strikeouts over 1 1/3 innings. Drew Helmsetter followed with two hitless frames before Antonio Velardi pitched the ninth to earn the save.

Michael James (0-2) took the loss for Hofstra, allowing four runs on eight hits over six innings. The graduate student did strike out a career-best eight batters. Andrew Mundy went the final three innings and allowed one hit.
