Towson, MD – Junior
Ryan Tierney scored four goals and freshmen
Sterlyn Ardrey and
Joey Elarde each added two goals for the Pride but the Tigers tallied six consecutive goals over a 19:06 span as 10th-ranked Towson posted a 10-9 come-from-behind victory over Hofstra in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams at Johnny Unitas Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Hofstra falls to 3-7 on the season and 0-1 in the CAA while Towson, which snapped a three-game losing streak, improved to 6-3 on the year and 1-0 in league play.
Tierney recorded his sixth hat-trick of the season for the Pride. Ardrey added an assist to go with his two goals while Elarde tallied the first two goals of his career. Pride sophomore goalie
Bobby Casey made 10 saves to post his sixth double-digit game of the season.
Towson was led by Grant Maloof with three goals and one assists and Brody McLean with three goals. Brendan Sunday and Grey Ey each had a goal and an assist for the Tigers. Starter Tyler Canto made two saves and allowed six goals in 26:20 of action before being lifted for Shane Brennan, who made four saves and allowed three goals.
The Pride jumped on the board first for only the third time this season as Tierney dented the twine at the 9:50 mark of the first quarter for his 23rd goal of the year. The Tigers responded with consecutive goals by Maloof just 35 seconds apart to take a 2-1 advantage at the 8:30 mark. Hofstra would close out the first quarter with unassisted goals by Ardrey, Elarde and Tierney over the last 5:38 to take a 4-2 lead after one period. Elarde's goal was his first of his career.
Towson opened the second quarter by scoring two of the first three goals as McLean and Maloof sandwiched Tierney's third goal of the contest to close to within one of the Pride at 5-4 with 12:33 to play in the half.
Hofstra's Elarde tallied his second of the contest at the 4:37 mark and Ardrey notched his second of the game and seventh of the year with 2:53 to play to boost the Pride lead to 7-4. The Tigers would close the deficit to 7-5 as McLean tallied his second of the game and 20th of the year with 1:57 to play in the half.
Buoyed by their late second quarter goal and a carry-over man-up opportunity in the third that they capitalized on with a goal by Timmy Monahan, the Tigers added five more goals over the first 17:09 of the second half to open up a 10-7 advantage after Brendan Sunday's goal with 12:51 to play in the fourth.
Just 16 seconds later, the Pride ended their 20:18 drought as defenseman
Michael Altmann went coast-to-coast for his second goal of the season to close the deficit to 10-9. Tierney added his fourth of the game with 2:55 to play to make it a one-goal game at 10-9.
The Pride had two opportunities to tie the game in the final two minutes but goalie Shane Brennan, who replaced starter Tyler Canto in the second quarter, posted two of his four saves to secure the win.
Hofstra returns to action next Saturday, April 6 when the Pride host the Minutemen of Massachusetts in a CAA contest at James M. Shuart Stadium. Game time for the Alumni Day contest is 1 p.m.
