Mt. Pleasant, SC - Logan McRae's two-out, three-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Cougars a 7-4 victory in game one. The Pride lost game two, 16-0.
Vito Friscia was 3-3 with three doubles in the opener while
Rob Weissheier was 2-5 with a pair of doubles. Each player had an RBI in game one as well.
Hofstra led 4-0 after five innings, scoring a pair of runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. In the fourth, with the bases loaded,
Parker Quinn's grounder was misplayed allowing Friscia to score the first run.
Vinnie Costello crossed the plate with the second run on a wild pitch. In the fifth, singles from
Daniel Page and
Sean Rausch put runners on the corners for Weissheier, who hit a ground rule double that drove in Page and sent Rausch to third. Friscia followed with a sacrifice fly to center to give Hofstra a 4-0 lead.
But Charleston chipped away with a run in the sixth on Clay Hunt's sacrifice fly and another in the seventh on Chaz Davey's sacrifice fly. Luke Manzo made it a one-run game in the eighth with a sacrifice fly of his own and the next batter, Dupree Hart tied the score with a single that drove in Bradley Dixon.
Dixon started the home 10th inning with a walk and advanced to third on a steal and a groundout. Hart was issued an intentional walk with two outs and stole second before McRae took a 1-2 pitch from
Andrew Mundy (0-2) over the fence in left center.
Ryan Rue started the game for Hofstra and allowed one run over 6 1/3 innings.
Jack Anderson threw 2/3 of an inning and gave up one run before Mundy went the final 2 2/3 and was charged with five runs on four hits.
Nathan Ocker (4-1) got the win in relief after working the final two outs of the 10th inning for Charleston.
In game two, Friscia was 2-3 and
Ryan Morash went 2-4. The Cougars scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back.
Jack Jett (0-1) took the loss for the Pride after allowing eight runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings. Danny Wondrack had a pair of hits including a home run and drove in three runs for the Cougars.Â
Hofstra (3-18, 0-3 CAA) will be back in action when it hosts Manhattan College Tuesday at 3 p.m. The game will be the Pride's home opener.
