BB: Hofstra Drops CAA Opener At Charleston

Mt. Pleasant, SC - The Hofstra University Baseball team opened Colonial Athletic Association play with a 9-0 loss to host College of Charleston Friday night at the Ballpark at Patriots Point. Griffin McLarty shut the Pride out for eight innings, allowing just two hits with 11 strikeouts.

Hofstra fell to 3-16 on the season, all away from home, and 0-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play. The Cougars improved to 17-10 overall and evened their conference mark at 2-2.

McLarty (4-2) allowed a second inning double to Rob Weissheier and a third inning single to Sean Rausch. Trey Fields pitched the ninth and allowed singles to Anthony D'Onofrio and Weissheier.  

Charleston scored four times in the second off Hofstra starter Michael James (0-5). Harrison Hawkins had an RBI single, Dupree Hart added a run scoring groundout and Chaz Davey closed out the inning with a two-run single. The Cougars added two more runs in the sixth on a sac fly from Chris Graham and an RBI single from Luke Manzo. Danny Wondrak capped the scoring in the seventh with a 3-run home run.

Davey, Hawkins and Graham each finished with two hits on the day, while Logan McRae was 3-3 with a double and a run scored.

The team will play a doubleheader Saturday at 2 p.m. to conclude the series. The schedule was revised due to bad weather forecasted on Sunday.

Notes:
-Hofstra, which ranks fourth in the nation in double plays, turned three in the game.
-Hofstra is 8-14 against Charleston.
-The Pride fell to 8-10 in CAA openers and snapped a two-game win streak in CAA lid-lifters.
-Weissheier had his sixth multi-hit game of the season and extended his on-base streak to 14 games.
-D'Onofrio has a five-game hitting streak.
-James went six innings and allowed all nine runs on 11 hits. Mark Faello threw the final two frames and allowed three hits.
