Ryan Tierney scored three goals and classmate
Ryan Kinnard scored twice but the Scarlet Knights scored five unanswered goals to snap a 4-4 tie second quarter deadlock and give Rutgers a 10-7 victory over Hofstra at HighPoint.com Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Rutgers, which snapped a two-game losing skid, improved to 5-4 on the season. Hofstra, which dropped its second consecutive game, slips to 3-6 on the year.
In addition to Kinnard and Tierney, who tallied his 20th and 21st goals of the season, Hofstra received a goal and two assists from senior
Jimmy Yanes. Sophomore
Riley Forte and freshman
Nick Williams scored the other two Pride goals. Sophomore
Bobby Casey recorded eight saves in the Pride cage.
Rutgers was led by Kieran Mullins with a goal and four assists while Adam Charalambides added four goals. Ryan Gallagher tallied two goals and one assist while Mark Schachte added two goals. Max Edelman tallied 18 saves, including eight in the third quarter.
The Scarlet Knights opened the scoring just 1:22 into the game as Charalambides tallied his 24th goal of the year. Kinnard tied the game for Hofstra four minutes later for the first of three tied scores in the half. Rutgers' Ryan Gallagher then scored back-to-back goals five minutes apart to give Rutgers a 3-1 lead after one quarter.
The Pride tied the game at 3-3 early in the second quarter as
Riley Forte and
Ryan Tierney scored in the first 2:22 of the period. It was Tierney's 20th goal of the season. But after Rutgers' Charalambides and Hofstra's
Jimmy Yanes exchanged goals two minutes apart short time later in the period, the Scarlet Knights went on a five-goal run, including two goals by Schachte, to open up a 9-4 lead with 8:38 to play in the fourth quarter. The Rutgers run coincided with a 33:46 scoring drought by the Pride.
Hofstra ended the drought with 5:51 to play as Kinnard scored his second and, just 1:01 later Tierney tallied his second of the game to close the gap to 9-6. But Charalambides tallied his fourth of the game with 52 seconds left for Rutgers before Tierney completed the hat-trick with 30 seconds remaining to close out the scoring.
Hofstra will return to action next Saturday, March 30 when the Pride begin Colonial Athletic Association play against the Tigers of Towson at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Maryland. Game time is noon.

- Saturday's game was the 30th meeting between the Pride and the Scarlet Knights. The series stands at 16-14 in favor of Rutgers. The contest was the first meeting between the two programs since 1999.
