BB: Hofstra Can't Overcome Early Deficit In Loss At Army West Point

West Point, NY - Army West Point scored five time in the first inning and added a pair of two run innings before holding off a late Hofstra rally in a 9-4 win Wednesday at Doubleday Field.

Hofstra fell to 3-12 on the year with the loss. Army West Point moved above the .500 mark at 10-9.

The Pride opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as Anthony D'Onofrio reached on an error to lead off the game and advanced to second on the play. After moving to third on a fly out to right, D'Onofrio came in to score on Vito Friscia's double.

But the lead was short-lived as Army loaded the bases on a walk, hit batsman, and a walk against Pride starter Mike Murray. That prompted a call to the bullpen as Seamus Brazill came on in relief. After an out on a fielder's choice, the Black Knights strung together three consecutive hits to score four runs and added a fifth on a throwing error to take the 5-1 lead. John McKenna had a two-run single in the inning while Andre Walden and Josh White each drove in one run with singles.

Army added two more runs in the third on Jacob Hurtubise's two-run single off Mark Faello to take a 7-1 lead. The Black Knights had loaded the bases against Brazill on two walks and a single. Jeremiah Adams capped the Army scoring in the fifth with a two-run double.

Hofstra rallied for four runs in the ninth off Black Knights reliever Cam Opp. Walks to Sean Rausch and Vinnie Costello started the inning and Ryan Morash followed with an RBI single. A walk to Daniel Page loaded the bases and another to Alex Sica plated the Pride's second run. Hofstra scored a third run in the inning on a double play before Page scored the final run on a wild pitch.

Murray (0-3) took the loss for Hofstra after being charged with three runs. D'Onofrio, Friscia, Morash, and Page had the Pride hits. Page also drew two walks, as did Rob Weissheier.

Ray Bartoli (1-0) got the win for Army West Point, allowing one unearned run on two hits over five innings. Walden paced the Army West Point offense with three hits. Hurtubise, Adams, and McKenna each drove in a pair of runs.

Hofstra is back in action Friday at 3 p.m. when it opens a three-game series at St. John's.
