Queens, NY - Sean Mooney allowed one unearned run over six innings and Mike Antico went 4-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored in game one as St. John's swept a doubleheader from Hofstra Sunday at Jack Kaiser Stadium. The Red Storm won game one, 9-1 and took game two, 9-0, behind the shutout pitching of Joe LaSorsa, Jeff Belge and Gavin Hollowell.
Hofstra slipped to 3-14 on the season with the losses. The Red Storm moved to 10-9 with the wins.
The Red Storm used a five-run second inning to take control of game one. St. John's racked up five hits in the inning including a pair of doubles. Ryan Markey drew a one-out walk and came around to score on Ryan Hogan's double to left. After a ground ball out, Mike Antico singled in Hogan for a 2-0 lead. A single from Rudy Aguilar put runners on the corners and Carson Bartels hit a ground rule double that plated Antico. Brandon Milled followed with a two-run single that made it 5-0 in favor of the home team. The Red Storm would add two more runs in the third on Antico's double and one in the fifth on a sacrifice bunt. Bartels would add another RBI double in the seventh that made it a 9-1 game.
Hofstra got on the board in the top of the fifth as
Austin Gauthier drew a leadoff walk and
Vinnie Costello followed with a single. Both runners advanced on a passed ball and then advanced again on a second passed ball with Gauthier scoring.
Ryan Rue (1-2) took the game one loss for the Pride, allowing seven runs on nine hits in 2 2/3 innings. Mooney improved to 2-0 this season after allowing three hits while striking out seven in his six innings of work. Joe Kelley threw 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief while Ethan Routzhan got the final out of the game.
The Pride had five hits in game one with
Anthony D'Onofrio,
Vito Friscia,
Rob Weissheier,
Sean Flaherty, and Costello each collecting one.
In the nightcap, LaSorsa (2-2) pitched five scoreless innings and allowed four hits. Belge threw three hitless frames and struck out eight while Hollowell threw a hitless ninth inning. The Red Storm got all the runs they would need in the first inning as Markey drove in Bartels with a single. The Red Storm used a five-run seventh to close out the scoring and put the game out of reach.
Markey had two hits in the game. Bartels recorded a three-hit game and added three runs and two RBIs. Sean McGeehan also had three hits for the Red Storm and scored twice.
Friscia had two hits for the Pride, while Weissheier and
Daniel Page had one each.
Michael James (0-4) started for the Pride and took the loss after allowing an unearned run and five hits in three innings.
Hofstra is back in action Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Monmouth.
Notes:
-Rue had a stretch of 15 innings without allowing an earned run snapped.
-Flaherty's double was the first of his career.
-Friscia has an eight-game hitting streak.

Kyle Skidmore pitched the final 1 1/3 innings of game two and did not allow a run.
