MLAX: Hofstra Stumbles Against 20th-Ranked Georgetown

Hempstead, NY – Pride junior Ryan Tierney scored a team-high three goals but Robert Clark tallied four goals and Daniel Bucaro added three goals and three assists to lead the 20th-ranked Hoyas of Georgetown to a 14-6 victory at Hofstra at James M. Shuart Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Pride slipped to 2-3 on the season with their third consecutive loss while the Hoyas improved to 4-1 this year.

Tierney recorded his third hat-trick of the year and the 14th of his career with his three goals including two in the second quarter. Freshmen Sterlyn Ardrey and Whit Stopak and sophomore Keegan Santos added the other Pride goals. Sophomore Bobby Casey recorded seven saves in the Pride goal.

Georgetown was led by the senior Clark, who scored two goals in each half, and Bucaro, who had a goal at the end of the second quarter and two assists in the third during the Hoyas four-goal run that pushed their lead to 11-4. Senior Lucas Wittenberg added two goals and three assists and junior Jake Carraway chipped in with one goal and two assists. Three Georgetown goalies combined to make 11 saves with sophomore Owen McElroy making 10 saves in 54 minutes of action.

The Hoyas jumped on the board just 52 seconds into the game as Clark tallied his seventh of the season. Hofstra tied the game almost six minutes later as freshman Sterlyn Ardrey dented the twine for his first collegiate goal. But the Hoyas went on a five-goal run, with Wittenberg scoring twice, to take a 6-1 lead with 10:50 to play in the half. The Pride scored three of the next four goals, including two by Tierney to start the spurt and close to 7-4 with 1:57 to play in the second.

But Bucaro's 15th goal of the year just two seconds before halftime started a four-goal Hoya run that boosted the lead to seven. Tierney ended the run with 3:38 to play in the third with his 14th of the season. But Georgetown answered with three consecutive goals before sophomore Keegan Santos tallied his first of the season for the Pride with 2:15 remaining to close out the scoring in the 14-6 decision.

Hofstra will return to action next Saturday, March 9 when the Pride host the ninth-ranked Buckeyes of Ohio State at noon. It will be Hofstra's fourth ranked-opponent of the young season.
