Shannon Boyle posted four draw controls, two caused turnovers and two ground balls to lead the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team to a huge 13-10 victory over #25 High Point on Saturday evening at Tierney Field at the US Lacrosse Headquarters. The win was the program's first ranked victory since a 17-15 win over #13 Towson on April 16, 2017.
Hofstra improves to 5-3 with the win, while High Point evens its record at 4-4.
It was an important first half for the Pride as Hofstra scored the first two goals of the contest off the sticks of juniors
Mary Kate Gerety and Mattera. After High Point got on the board, Hofstra would extend its lead to 5-1 as Parrella, junior
Arianna Esposito and Boyle each scored to push the lead to four goals. Back-to-back goals from High Point's Abby Hormes and Ashley Britton made it 8-5 late in the half, but Parrella scored with two seconds remaining in the opening stanza for a huge momentum swing heading into the break.
The lead would grow to five as senior
Jenna Budd scored with 29:05 left in regulation to make it 10-5. The Panthers would cut the deficit to three on a pair of occasions as the half continued but each time, Parrella was the answer and her last goal of the game made it 12-8 in favor of the Pride with 19:25 left. High Point would score twice over the next eight minutes to make it 12-10 but sophomore
Katie Whelan put the finishing touches on the important win as she scored with 7:20 left for the Pride's 13th goal of the contest.
Whelan finished with three points on two goals and one assist, while Mattera had a goal and an assist for the Pride. Budd had a strong day for the Pride with a goal and two assists. Mattera added three draw controls, two draw controls and two ground balls.
Rachel Foster had five points on two goals and three assists for High Point, which also got two goals and one assist from Hormes.
Jess Smith made 10 saves in net for the Pride.
Hofstra is back in action next Saturday when it hosts Sacred Heart at 1 p.m.
NOTES
- Hofstra is now 1-1 all-time against High Point. The only previous meeting occurred during the 2018 season in Hempstead.
- Parrella moved into seventh place all-time in assists at Hofstra. She now has 58 to pass Kathleen Mikowski, who had 57 from 2000-03.
- Mattera moved into eighth place all-time at Hofstra in draw controls. She now has 124 to pass Becky Conto, who had 122 from 2013-17.
