WLAX: Darcie Smith And Parrella Lead Hofstra To Dominating Win

Hempstead, NY - Junior Darcie Smith had 12 draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers and junior Alyssa Parrella posted a career-high tying seven goals to lead the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team to a dominate 11-4 win over Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.

The win improves Hofstra's record to 6-3, while Sacred Heart falls to 1-7 with the loss. The Pride has won two straight and six of their last eight games.

Sacred Heart opened the scoring in the game at the 27:48 mark before Hofstra immediately took control and would score the next six goals to lead 6-1 with 6:10 left in the opening half following a goal from junior Alexa Mattera off an assist from freshman Grace Langella. Parrella keyed the early run as she scored four of the Pride's goals during the run.

After Hofstra took a 6-2 halftime advantage, the Pride would push the lead to as many as nine, 11-2, as they scored the first five goals of the second stanza. Parrella scored the first two goals of the half before before joined in the run by Mattera and sophomore Katie Whelan. The Pioneers scored twice in the final three-plus minutes to account for the final score.

Mattera and Whelan each finished with two goals for the Pride, with Mattera adding a game-high five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Freshman Jess Smith earned the win in net for the Pride as she made eight saves in just over 48 minutes of action.

Lydia Werlau had three goals for Sacred Heart, which also got two ground balls from Casey Hannon and Shana Hecht. Claire McElhenny posted two caused turnovers and Hecht made 11 saves for the Pioneers.

Hofstra is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Dartmouth for a 3 p.m. contest.
