BB: Liberty Takes Series Opener From Hofstra

Lynchburg, VA - Brandon Rohrer and Logan Mathieu combined to go 7-8 with four RBIs, and Andrew McInvale allowed one run over eight innings as Liberty won the first game of a three-game series, 9-1, Friday night at Liberty Baseball Stadium.

The Flames won for the third consecutive game and improved to 13-4 in 2019. Hofstra slipped to 2-10 on the season.

Liberty took a 2-0 lead in the second as Rohrer led off with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. Mathieu followed with a double to center that brought in the first run of the night. Two batters later, Drew Baughman doubled to left to bring home Mathieu. Rohrer would add an RBI single in a three-run third inning for the Flames, while Mathieu would homer in the frame as well.

The Flames would extend to a 9-0 lead in the fifth with a four-run inning. Will Wagner homered and Mathieu knocked in another run with a ground out.

Hofstra averted the shutout in the seventh, loading the bases on a walk and two singles before Parker Quinn lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield to plate Vito Friscia.

Michael James (0-3) started for Hofstra and took the loss after allowing five runs on six hits in four innings of work. Mike Mirando (2/3), Jack Anderson (2) and Jimmy Joyce (1) combined to hold the Flames scoreless for the final 3 2/3 innings.

McInvale moved to 4-0 after allowing just three hits with seven strikeouts in his eight innings of work. Logan Riley pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the contest. Rohrer was 4-4 with a double and an RBI while Mathieu went 3-4 with a double, a home run, and three RBIs.

Hofstra and Liberty continue their series Saturday at 2 p.m.

Notes:
-Hofstra is now 1-3 all-time versus Liberty
-Friscia was on base twice with a single and a walk.
-Rob Weissheier and Austin Gauthier also had singles for the Pride.
