WBB: Hofstra Upsets Top-Seeded James Madison in CAA Quarterfinal

NEWARK, Del. – The No. 9 seeded Hofstra University women's basketball team made history for the second-straight contest, upsetting the No. 1 seeded James Madison Dukes, 57-50 in the Colonial Athletic Association quarterfinal at the Bob Carpenter Center on Thursday afternoon. It was the first time in the CAA's 36-year history that a one-seed has been eliminated in the quarterfinal round.

The Pride increased its record to 11-21 on the season while James Madison fell to 25-5 on the year.

Freshman guard JaKayla Brown shined for the Pride, scoring a game and career-high 17 points on a 7-of-12 performance from the floor (58 percent) while also grabbing six rebounds which was second on the team, behind sophomore Jaylen Hines who hauled in a career-high 14 rebounds. Senior Boogie Brozoski reached double figures in addition to Brown, scoring 14 points on the day while going 11-of-12 from the free throw line.

Hofstra also got a solid performance from freshman Caria Reynolds, who was 3-of-3 from the floor and 2-of-2 from the free throw line, scoring all of Hofstra's second quarter points. Also playing an important role down low was junior Marianne Kalin who grabbed just six rebounds, but had five offensive boards which was the most since she had seven against UMBC earlier this season.

As a team, Hofstra posted its fourth-straight 80 percent or better effort from the line, shooting 15-of-18 from the stripe and 11-of-12 down the stretch.

A low-scoring first quarter saw James Madison leading by a score of 10-8, but the Hofstra defense held JMU to just three field goals and 17 percent shooting in the first frame to keep it close after one. The Dukes got back into it in the second quarter, outscoring Hofstra 16-8 in the frame to take a 10-point lead at the half, 26-10.

Hofstra came out of the locker room with a huge fire underneath, as the Pride went on a 20-2 run that included 17-straight points while holding James Madison without a point for over seven minutes. Brown got the run started with four-straight tallies, before Kalin, Brozoski, and junior Ana Hernandez Gil helped stretch the Hofstra lead out to nine points with 1:28 remaining in the third, the largest Hofstra advantage of the game. During the run, Hernandez Gil drained two three-pointers within a 22 second span to help the lead.

James Madison answered back with an 8-2 spurt, taking back a 42-39 lead over the Pride, but then Brown and Hines hit two-straight layups to give the Pride a 43-42 edge with 3:16 in the fourth. James Madison hit two free throws to make the score, 44-43 in favor of the Dukes. A Hernandez Gil three-pointer ignited another 10-4 Hofstra run, with Brozoski making 10 free throws starting from the 1:33 mark all the way down to five seconds remaining, as Hofstra could taste the victory with the score, 56-48. James Madison added a pair of free throws, but Brozoski hit one more foul shot with four seconds to play to seal the deal for Hofstra, 57-50.

Hofstra will now take on No. 4 Towson in the CAA Semifinals, tomorrow, Friday March 15. Tip off at the Bob Carpenter Center is set for 1:00 pm.
