WBB: Hofstra's Historic CAA Championship Run Comes to an End Against No. 4 Towson

NEWARK, Del. – The ninth-seeded Hofstra University Women's Basketball team saw its historic Colonial Athletic Association Championship run come to an end with a 69-48 defeat against the fourth-seeded Towson Tigers on Friday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center. Hofstra reached the semifinal round for the first time since the 2014-15 season.

Hofstra concludes its 2018-19 campaign with an 11-22 overall mark, while Towson improved to 19-12 and advances to the CAA Championship game for the first time in program history and will play the No. 2 seeded Drexel Dragons.

Sophomore Jaylen Hines led Hofstra in scoring for the first time in season, scoring a career-high 17 points on a 7-of-9 effort from the field while also going 3-of-4 from the stripe. Hines scored 12 of her points in the second half, shooting 86 percent in the final 20 minutes and 4-of-4 in the fourth quarter. Following Hines in scoring was senior Boogie Brozoski who tallied 12 points, a team-high five rebounds, and three steals. Junior Marianne Kalin dished out a career-high six assists.

Hofstra played tough with the Tigers in the first quarter, as the Pride opened up with a 4-2 lead in the first 1:40. After two-straight Towson layups, Brozoski hit a three-pointer to get ahead by one point, 7-6. Towson took command with an 8-0 run, but Brozoski drained another long ball with 22 seconds remaining to trim the Tiger lead to four, 14-10. Towson took full control in the second quarter, allowing just seven Hofstra points in the frame while scoring 29 to make the halftime score, 43-17.

The Tigers scored the first three points of the second half, but the Pride responded with six unanswered, including four tallies by freshman JaKayla Brown. Despite the small offensive run, Towson continued to stay out of reach for the Pride, extending the Tiger lead to 29 at the end of the third.

Hofstra got a little bit of life in the final frame, going on a 10-2 run lasting just under four minutes, until the 5:24 mark. During the spurt, Hines scored six points for the Pride while junior Sandra Karsten and Brown added a pair of free throws. Hofstra got its final two field goals by Kalin and Hines, but the damage was done early as Towson earned the semifinal win.
