NEWARK, Del. – Senior guard
Boogie Brozoski poured in 42 points and broke several scoring records on Tuesday afternoon to propel the Hofstra University Women's Basketball team to a thrilling 77-75 Colonial Athletic Association first round victory over the two-time defending CAA Champion, Elon Phoenix at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Brozoski's 42 points set a career-high, a Hofstra single-game record, a CAA Tournament single-game record, and a Bob Carpenter facility record on a day in which she eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her career. She shot 13-of-24 (54 percent) from the field and 4-of-9 (44 percent) from beyond the arc while adding her sixth-straight perfect performance at the free throw line, going an unblemished 12-of-12 from the stripe. She also paced the Pride with four assists while matching her career-high of four steals.
Senior guard
Sica Cuzic joined Brozoski as the only other Pride player in double figures, as she was 5-of-10 from the floor with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Sophomore
Jaylen Hines played a solid game as well, shooting 4-of-5 from the floor with five rebounds.
Hofstra opened up the lead to as many as seven points at the 7:37 mark in the first quarter, but Elon quickly got back within one point just a minute and a half later. Hines made a layup with 5:55 to go in the first, igniting a 9-0 Hofstra run capped by a three-pointer by Brozoski. Junior guard
Ana Hernandez Gil hit a jumper from the right side with four seconds to play in the first as Hofstra led, 26-15 at the end of the first break.
A Brozoski jumper just over four minutes into the second quarter gave Hofstra its largest lead of the game at 15 points, and after an Elon layup, Brozoski extended the advantage even further with a three-point basket from the right side to increase the Pride lead to 16 with the score 36-20. Elon ended the half scoring five of the final six second quarter points, shrinking the Hofstra lead to just seven midway through.
Just over two minutes into the third quarter, Elon's Kayla Liles made a three-pointer to bring the Phoenix within six points, but a 7-0 Hofstra spurt pulled the Pride lead back out to 13 points. However, Elon would not go away, exchanging a 7-0 run of their own right back to Hofstra and eventually got within three points with two free throws by Emily Maupin.
Hofstra extended the lead back out to double digits, going on a 10-2 run over the next 4:48 with Brozoski scoring eight of the Pride's points to improve the score to 75-63 with 3:57 remaining. The Phoenix responded with six-straight points to get back within six, and continued the run to 10-2 as the Pride saw themselves ahead by just two points with 39 seconds to play after two Lexi Mercer free throws. The Hofstra defense stayed tough the remainder of the way as Elon missed two field goals under the 10 second mark, including Maupin's three-point attempt at the buzzer which would won the game for the Phoenix. Instead, Hofstra survived, advanced, and celebrated the 77-75 victory over the Phoenix.
With the win, Hofstra improved to 10-21 on the year, while Elon sees its season come to an end at 9-21.
The Pride will have a quick turnaround and will next take on the top-seeded James Madison Dukes, tomorrow, March 13 at 12 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.
