WBB: Brozoski and Hernandez Gil Lead Hofstra Over Charleston

Hempstead, NY Senior Boogie Brozoski tallied a game-high 19 points and seven assists to lead three Pride players in double-figures as Hofstra defeated the Cougars of Charleston, 68-49 in a Colonial Athletic Association game at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex Friday night.

Hofstra improves to 9-18 overall and 3-12 in Colonial Athletic Association play with its second consecutive victory. Charleston suffered its sixth consecutive loss to fall to 7-20 overall and 3-13 in the CAA.

In addition to Brozoski, who also grabbed six rebounds, the Pride received 17 points from junior Ana Hernandez Gil, who was 6-of-13 from the field, including 5-of-11 from the three-point line. In addition, freshman Caria Reynolds played a great game and grabbed her first collegiate double double as she net 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting to go along with 10 rebounds. As a team shot 46 percent (27-of-59) from the field.

Charleston also had three players in double-figures led by senior Darien Huff with 15 points, junior Deja Ford with 13 points and five rebounds, and freshman Arynn Eady with 11 points and seven caroms. The Cougars shot 34.5 percent (19-55) from the field.

Hofstra found themselves in a good-sized hole in the first quarter as the Cougars scored the first 10 points in the contest with Ford's three-pointer capping the run with 7:28 to play in the period. After Jaylen Hines  scored inside for the Pride and Tyler Collins hit a bucket for Charleston, Hofstra went on a 14-4 run behind six points from Reynolds, to tie the game at 16-all after Brozoski's driving layup with 25 seconds remaining in the quarter. Huff hit a three-pointer with five seconds to play to give Charleston a 19-16 lead after one frame.

The second quarter was a pivotal period for the Pride as Hofstra went on a 17-4 spurt over the first 5:54 to build a 33-23 lead following a Brozoski jumper. Hernandez Gil hit four three-pointers in the run to lead the Pride. After Ford hit two free throws for the Cougars just 26 seconds later, senior Sica Cuzic hit a three-pointer at the 2:45 mark to boost the lead to 36-25. The two teams exchanged two lay-ups each over the last two minutes as the Pride held on to their biggest lead of the half at 40-29 at the break.

The third quarter slowed down a bit with the Cougars outscoring the Pride, 8-6 over the first 6:21 of the period to close to within eight at 45-37 with 3:39 to play after a Latrice Perkins lay-up. But Hofstra answered with six straight points as part of an 8- 2 run to close the third to boost the lead to 53-39.

Hofstra was never really threatened in the fourth quarter. After Reynolds hit a jumper for the Pride to boost the lead back to 16 at 55-39 just 1:04 into the period, Charleston scored the next six points, including five by Huff, to close to within 10 at 55-45 with 6:06 remaining. Hofstra responded with six straight points as part of an 11-1 run, with seven from Brozoski, to open their biggest lead of the game at 66-46 with 2:51 to play. Charleston added a three-pointer by Ford and the Pride added a jumper from Hernandez-Gil for the 68-49 final score.
