WBB: UNCW's Second Half Rally Downs Hofstra

Hempstead, NY Seniors Boogie Brozoski tallied 12 points and Sica Cuzic added 11 for the Pride but senior Chinyere Bell tallied 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead three Seahawks in double-figures as UNCW defeated Hofstra, 61-51 in a Colonial Athletic Association game at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex Sunday afternoon.

Hofstra, which saw its two-game winning streak snapped, falls to 9-19 overall and 3-13 in Colonial Athletic Association play. UNCW improved to 17-11 overall and 10-7 in the CAA.

Brozoski, who posted her 24th double-figure scoring game of the season and 34th of her career, led the team in scoring for the 15th time this season and grabbed four rebounds. Cuzic recorded her ninth double-figure scoring game on Senior Day for the Pride. Hofstra shot 32 percent (19-59) from the field.

Bell, who sparked a second half comeback for the Seahawks, tallied all 16 of her points in the second half on six of seven shooting from the field. It was her 13th game in double-figures, her second double-double of the year and the 11 caroms tied her season-high. Junior Gigi Smith added 14 points and grabbed five rebounds and Ahyiona Vason chipped in with 13 points. The Seahawks shot 39 percent (22-56) from the field.

In a slow moving first quarter, the Pride jumped out to a 5-0 lead just 1:33 in following Sica Cuzic's three-pointer. The Seahawks battled back and outscored Hofstra, 11-6 the remaining 8:27 of the period to pull into an 11-11 tie after one quarter following Timber Tate's three-pointer with 0:51 to play in the period.

Like the first quarter, the Pride opened up with five unanswered points in the second behind a lay-up by Cuzic and a three-pointer from Petja Krupenko to take a 16-11 lead with 6:38 to play in the half. UNCW closed to within one point twice, the latest at 18-17 after a jumper by Carol Anne-Obusek with 3:34 to play. But Brozoski hit a jumper and a lay-up to boost the lead back to five at 22-17 with 2:41 left. UNCW closed to within a bucket at 22-20 with 1:25 to play following three free throws by Vason. But Cuzic hit a free throw and Krupenko hit her second three-pointer for the Pride to open up a 26-20 lead before settling for the 27-23 lead at halftime.

UNCW climbed back into the contest in the third quarter after Hofstra boosted its lead to six points twice, the latest at 32-26 following two free throws by Ana Hernandez-Gil with 5:56 to play. The Seahawks then went on a 7-0 spurt with Bell's put-back giving UNCW their first lead of the contest  at 33-32 with 2:29 to play in the third. Marianne Kalin hit a jumper for Hofstra just 28 seconds later to regain the lead for Hofstra but UNCW scored the last four points of the period to hold a 37-34 lead after three quarters.

The Seahawks scored the first five points of the fourth to boost their lead to 42-34 on a three-pointer by Gigi Smith with 8:47 to play. The Pride responded by scoring six of the next seven points to close to within three at 43-40 with 7:31 to play following a Brozoski lay-up. UNCW countered with a 10-0 run behind eight points from Bell to boost their lead to 53-40 with 4:32 to play after a three-point play by Bell. Hofstra never cut the deficit to single-digits as the Seahawks posted the 61-51 victory.

Hofstra will return to action on Thursday, March 7 when the Pride travel to North Carolina to face the Phoenix of Elon at 7 p.m.
