MLAX: Hofstra's Late Rally Falls Short In Loss To Stony Brook

Hempstead, NY – Freshman Whit Stopak scored a personal best four goals, including three in the final 5:49 to erase a 10-7 deficit, but junior Tom Haun notched his fifth goal of the game with 1:20 to play to give the Seawolves of Stony Brook an 11-10 victory over host Hofstra in the Long Island Rivalry, presented by The Greene Turtle at James M. Shuart Stadium Tuesday night.

Stopak, who scored in his first contest at Lehigh on February 9, scored all four of his goals in the second half to lead the Pride back. Junior Ryan Kinnard tallied two goals, both in the first half, while classmate Ryan Tierney added a goal and an assist. Sophomores Bryce Tolmie, James Philbin and Riley Forte each added single goals. Hofstra sophomore goalie Bobby Casey made eight saves in the Pride cage.

In addition to Haun's five goals, the Seawolves received two goals each from Patrick Kaschalk and Tom Dugan and one each from Jack Walsh and Connor Grippe. Mike McCannell added four assists. Michael Bollinger made nine saves in the Stony Brook cage.

In a game that featured four tied scores and just one lead change, the Pride led early in the first quarter on Kinnard's opening goal at the 9:14 mark. The Seawolves scored three unanswered goals including two in the second to take a 3-1 lead after Kaschalk's goal at the 8:52 mark of the second quarter. But Forte and Tierney scored to tie the game at 3-3 with 4:28 to play in the half. The Seawolves added two more goals before Kinnard scored his second for the Pride to close the halftime scoring with Hofstra trailing 5-4.

The Pride tied it at 5-5 just 3:39 into the third quarter on Tolmie's goal off a pass from Sterlyn Ardrey. The Seawolves scored three of the next four goals to take an 8-6 lead into the fourth quarter following a Dugan goal with 15 seconds to play in the third. The Pride got one back just 16 seconds into the fourth as James Philbin scored his fourth of the year off a pass from Mark Ellis to close to within one at 8-7. But once again, Stony Brook added two goals, by Grippe and Haun, to boost the lead back to three at 10-7 with 9:09 to play.

Stopak answered for the Pride scoring three unanswered, unassisted goals, the latest with just 1:49 to play to tie the contest at 10-10. But on the restart, Stony Brook wasted little time with Haun beating Casey, getting a lucky bounce just 29 seconds later from the game winner. Hofstra had a chance to tie the contest but a shot in the waning seconds whistled wide of the Seawolves goal.

Hofstra returns to action this Saturday, March 2 when the Pride entertain the 20th-ranked Hoyas of Georgetown at Shuart Stadium at 3 p.m. For ticket information visit HofstraTickets.com, call (516) HOF-TIXX, as well as at Shuart Stadium on game night, or stop by the Hofstra Athletics Ticket Office in the lobby of the David S.
