WBB: Hofstra Erases 13-Point Fourth Quarter Deficit to Edge Northeastern, 63-62

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior guard Sica Cuzic converted on an old-fashioned three-point play with 2.4 seconds remaining to elevate the Hofstra University Women's Basketball team past Northeastern on Sunday, 63-62 at the Cabot Center. The Pride poured in 25 fourth quarter points and rallied from a 13-point deficit with 10 minutes to play to complete the season sweep over the Huskies.

With the win, Hofstra improves to 8-18 overall and 2-12 in Colonial Athletic Association play while Northeastern suffered its fifth loss out of their last six games, falling to 15-10 overall and 5-9 in the CAA.

Senior guard Boogie Brozoski had a great mid-range game from the floor, as she tallied 20 points on a 7-of-18 performance form the field with five free throws. In addition, Brozoski dished out five assists, her second-straight game with five or more helpers, while also pulling pulling down five rebounds. Joining Brozoski in double figures was junior guard Ana Hernandez Gil who added 12 points, nine of which were scored in the fourth quarter alone. Senior guard Sica Cuzic chipped in eight points for the Pride and also pulled down five rebounds. Juinor forward Marianne Kalin was the top rebounder for Hofstra as she hauled in seven boards.

Three Huskies finished in double figure scoring as Jess Genco and Shannon Todd each scored 14 points while Ayanna Dublin finished with 13.

Northeastern made the first bucket of the game held on to the advantage for the remainder of the half as the Huskies led by as many as nine points during the first 20 minutes of action. Northeastern used a 6-0 run capped off by a Genco jump shot as the Huskies reached a 14-point lead, the largest of the contest for the Huskies. Northeastern added four-straight points at the end of the third quarter to lead the Pride by 13 heading into the final frame.

The magic happened during the fourth quarter for the Pride, which was outstanding on both sides of the ball during the final stretch. Hofstra converted on 50 percent (9-of-18) of its field goal attempts in the period and limited Northeastern to 1-of-16 from the floor including 0-of-3 from beyond the arc.

The Pride started off the final stanza on a 9-2 run, as back-to-back Jaylen Hines layups and a Brozoski free throw helped the Pride get within six points, the closest score since the 1:50 mark in the second quarter. After a Northeastern bucket, Hines brought the Pride back within six with 4:48 to go, which eventually ignited an 11-2 run for Hofstra. During the run, Hernandez Gil went on a tear with three-straight three-pointers within a 1:52 second span to give Hofstra its first tie and lead of the contest. Northeastern would then re-gain the lead with three-straight free throws to make it a two-point contest with 22 seconds to play.

With three seconds on the clock, Brozoski missed a driving layup which would have tied the game, but Cuzic grabbed the offensive rebound, created open space and hit an off-balance layup and drew a foul with 2.4 seconds to go. Despite a noisy Cabot Center, Cuzic converted on her only free throw attempt of the game, giving Hofstra a one-point advantage. Northeastern advanced the ball to mid-court for the inbound pass, but a bad pass allowed Kalin to steal the ball away as Hofstra was able to hold on to the victory.

Hofstra will return to action for two-straight home games, the final home weekend of the year for the Pride. Charleston will visit the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex on Friday, March 1 at 7 p.m. before the Pride will close out its home schedule vs. UNCW on Sunday, March 3 at 1 p.m. For ticket information visit HofstraTickets.com, call (516) HOF-TIXX or stop by the Hofstra Athletics Ticket office in the lobby of the Mack Sports Complex during normal business hours.
