San Antonio, TX –
Rob Weissheier hit a three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to give Hofstra a 3-1 lead in game one and back the strong pitching of
Brad Camarda as the Pride split a doubleheader against Incarnate Word Saturday at Sullivan Field. The Pride won game one, 3-2, before losing game two by a score of 12-1.
Hofstra moved to 1-2 on the season while the Cardinals improved to 2-1.
After 4 1/2 innings of shutout baseball, Incarnate Word broke through with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Antonio Valdez led off with a single and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Ridge Rogers. But the Pride answered right back in the sixth as
Vito Friscia led off with a hit by pitch and then moved to second on a walk to
Austin Gauthier. That brought Tyler Perez in relief of Tyler Miller, and after getting a pair strikeouts Perez gave up a long home run to Weissheier for a 3-1 Hofstra lead. The Cardinals tacked on a run in the eighth on a Taylor Smith sacrifice fly, but
Andrew Mundy stranded two runners and then got a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth to seal the win and earn the save.
Camarda (1-0) allowed one run on four hits over six innings and tallied four strikeouts. Mundy went the final three frames, allowing the one run on three hits with two strikeouts.
Miller (0-1) took the loss for Incarnate Word after allowing two runs on two hits over five innings.
In the nightcap, the Cardinals scored three times in the sixth inning to extend to a 4-0 lead and then erupted for eight runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach. Jordan Thompson had two hits and five RBIs for the Cardinals. Gauthier broke up the shutout in the ninth, knocking in
Ryan Morash, who had doubled.
Morash (2-5) and Gauthier (2-4) were the only Pride players with multiple hits on the day.
Ryan Rue (0-1) took the loss for Hofstra, allowing four runs on five hits with three strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.
Bernie Martinez (1-0) got the win for UIW, allowing three hits over six scoreless innings. He walked five and struck out seven.
