San Antonio, TX - Luke Taggart threw seven scoreless innings and the Cardinals scored a pair of runs in the second and third inning before scoring five runs over the final two frames in a 9-1 victory over Hofstra Friday night at Sullivan Field in the season opener for both teams.
The Pride (0-1) worked out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning but was not as lucky in the second as the Cardinals (1-0) scored two runs without a hit. A hit batsman, a passed ball, and a walk put runners at first and second with one out. Following a double steal, an errant throw behind the runner at third allowed Jordan Thompson to score the first run and Ridge Rogers to move to third. Ryan Gonzalez then knocked in the second run with a sacrifice fly.
The Cardinals tacked on two more runs in the third as Sean Arnold had an RBI triple and then came in to score on an infield single by Antonio Valdez. Incarnate Word added an unearned run in the seventh and four runs in the eighth to close out the scoring. Ryan Gonzalez had the big blow, a three-run home run.
Hofstra broke through in the ninth, putting runners on second and third following a double off the bat of
Parker Quinn.
Rob Weissheier then ripped a single off reliever Cody Moos that scored
Austin Gauthier with the Pride's lone run.
Hofstra starter
Michael James (0-1) took the loss for the Pride after allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits in four innings. The fifth-year senior walked four batters and hit two others while recording two strikeouts.
