FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Hofstra rallied all the way back from a 13-point third quarter deficit and redshirt sophomore
Jaylen Hines hit a buzzer-beater layup to force overtime, but Fairfield out-lasted the Hofstra women's basketball team, 73-64, at Alumni Hall on Saturday afternoon.
Hines led the Pride in scoring and rebounding with her second double-double of the season composed of 15 points (7-of-14 FG) and a career-high 15 rebounds. Joining Hines with her first double-double of the her senior campaign and fourth of her career was
Marianne Kalin who netted 12 points on a 67 percent effort from the field (6-of-9) to go along with a season-high 10 boards.
In addition to Hines and Kalin, freshman
Sorelle Ineza and redshirt junior
Ana Hernandez Gil reached double figures as well. Hernandez Gil matched her season-high of 14 points while posting a perfect 7-of-7 effort from the charity stripe. Ineza shot 50 percent from the floor (5-of-10) and added four assists.
Hofstra finished the day shooting 41 percent from the floor (26-of-63) while posting three quarters in regulation with a shooting percentage of 47 percent or better.
The Pride came out on the floor strong to continue a season-long trend, shooting 50 percent (7-of-14) from the field to get things started but the Stags led by seven, 23-16, at the end of the first frame. Fairfield continued that advantage into halftime with the score, 36-26.
Fairfield hit a three-point shot on their first possession out of the locker room, but Kalin received pass from Ineza to spark a 13-6 Hofstra run that brought the Pride back within four points at the 3:20 mark in the third. During the spurt, Hofstra scored nine-straight points in a three-minute span while also holding the Stags scoreless for nearly four minutes. With 12 seconds remaining in the third, Hines found Hernandez Gil who knocked down a three-pointer to cut the Fairfield lead to just two points, 44-42 after three quarters.
The Stags stretched the lead back out to seven by the 5:12 mark in the fourth, but Hofstra got three-straight baskets from Hines, Ineza and Kalin to make it a one-point contest with 1:32 on the clock. After Hines tied the game for the first time since the clock read 5:34 in the first stanza, Fairfield's Sam Kramer hit a long jump-shot with two seconds remaining to take a 57-55 lead before a Hofstra called time out. With 1.2 seconds on the clock, Brown inbounded a pass in front of the Hofstra bench to find Hines, who pivoted around a defender and hit left-side layup to force the extra period.
Fairfield scored four of the first five overtime baskets, but the Stags scored seven free throws down the stretch to put the game out of reach for the Pride.
Hofstra will enjoy a two-week break of game action before returning to the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex for the final time in 2019 for a meeting with the Campbell Camels. Tip-off on Saturday, December 21 is set for 1 p.m.

-Hofstra snapped a five-game winning streak against the Stags and is now 8-2 all-time against Fairfield
-The last time that Hofstra had two players net double-doubles was on November 30, 2017 when Ashunae Durant (23 points, 12 rebounds) and Aleana Leon (12 points, 12 rebounds) had double doubles against Sacred Heart.
