Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The Pride outscored the Camels, 5-2, over the final 1:13 including four points from Hernandez Gil.
Hernandez Gil shot 8-10 on the day, all from three-point range and added a free throw for her career day.
Jaylen Hines was the only other Pride player in double-figures as she netted 14 points on 6-10 shooting.
Hofstra moved to 3-6 on the season with the win. Campbell suffered its second consecutive loss and dropped to 5-4 on the year.
The Pride did not show any rust from a two-week layoff between games as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first 1:22 behind a layup from Hines and a three-pointer from Hernandez Gil. Following a Campbell three-pointer, Hernandez Gil drained her second long-range jumper of the quarter to put the Pride up, 8-3 with 6:47 on the clock. Another three-pointer for the Camels made it an 8-6 game with 5:29 to go. Neither team would score for more than three minutes, until a Hines bucket gave the Pride their 10th point with 2:06 remaining. Campbell responded with the final two baskets of the quarter to knot the score at 10.
Campbell opened the second quarter with a 5-2 run to take a 15-12 lead with 7:12 on the clock following Lauren McNamara-Clement's layup. The Camels lead grew to eight, 20-12, with 5:16 to play. But Hofstra scored the next eight points as Hernandez Gil drained a pair of three-pointers around a Hines layup to tie the score at 20 with 3:27 to go. The run extended to 11-0 as
Vanerlie Valcourt had a free throw and a layup to give the Pride a 23-20 lead with 1:54 remaining. Neither team would score the rest of the way as the Pride went into halftime with the lead.
Offense was at a premium in the early stages of the third quarter as the teams combined for eight points over the first 5:01. Campbell scored six of those points and led, 26-25, at the media timeout with 4:59 to play. The Pride would take the lead, 28-27, with 4:10 to go on another three-pointer from Hernandez Gil. Just over a minute later, the Pride extended the lead to 30-27 as
Mikiyah Croskey got in the scorebook with a layup after an offensive rebound. Hofstra would outscore Campbell, 9-6, down the stretch and go into the fourth quarter with a 39-33 lead.
Hofstra went up by eight, 41-33, 11 seconds into the final quarter following a layup from Hines. But the Camels scored five unanswered points to cut their deficit to three with 8:33 remaining.
Marianne Kalin gave Hofstra a little breathing room as her layup made it a five-point game, 43-38, with 7:39 to go. The Pride's lead would grow to eight, 51-43, with 5:11 to play on Hernandez Gil's seventh three-pointer of the game. The Camels would go on a 10-2 run over the next 3:58 minutes to tie the score at 53 with 1:13 on the clock. Hernandez Gil drained her eighth three of the day to break the tie and then added a free throw with five seconds left. She missed the second but Kalin grabbed the offensive rebound and the Pride was able to run out the clock.
Kalin finished with eight rebounds to lead the Pride and tie for game-high honors. Valcourt had six rebounds on the day while Croskey, Hernandez Gil, and Hines chipped in with four rebounds.
Hayley Barber led Campbell with 19 points and added six rebounds. Taya Bolden had eight rebounds to lead the Camels. Â Â
Hofstra will return to action Sunday, December 29 at the Fordham Holiday Classic. The Pride will face Houston in their first round matchup at 3 p.m. and then will take on either Samford or Fordham on Monday, December 30 at a time to be determined.
Notes:
-This was the first-ever meeting between Hofstra and Campbell.
-The eight three-pointers matched Hernandez Gil's career-best, set last season at Holy Cross. She also had her previous high of 24 points in that game.
-The eight three-pointers were a Mack Sports Complex record for women's basketball, besting the old mark of seven held by several players.
-The eight three-pointers is one shy of the Hofstra record of nine set by Marguerite Moran against Delaware on Feb. 25, 1989. They are also the third-highest amount in CAA history.Â
-Hofstra shot a season-best .468 from the field and .615 from three-point range.
