Hempstead, NY – Three Pride players finished in double figures in scoring, led by senior
Marianne Kalin who netted a game-high 18 points to lead Hofstra to a 51-39 non-conference victory over the Morgan State Lady Bears at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex Wednesday night.
Hofstra improves to 2-5 on the season while Morgan State dropped its third consecutive game, falling to 3-6 on the year.
In addition to her season-high 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor, Kalin tied for a game-high nine rebounds. Redshirt sophomore
Jaylen Hines added 10 points (5-of-9 FG) and grabbed nine rebounds, and freshman
Sorelle Ineza added 11 points (5-of-9 FG) and three assists. The Pride finished the night shooting 43 percent from the floor, including a 63 percent effort in the second quarter.
Morgan State was led by Chelsea Mitchell with 16 points, six rebounds and four steals. The Lady Bears shot 33 percent (14-of-43) from the field.
Hofstra had momentum from the start, opening up a 4-0 lead with Hines getting off to a quick start with all four points for the Pride. The remainder of the first quarter stayed close throughout, but Hofstra held a 13-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
After a
Sandra Karsten bucket opened up the second stanza with a layup, Morgan State brought it back within one before Ineza and sophomore
Vanerlie Valcourt pushed the lead back to five. The Lady Bears got within three points again, but Ineza and Kalin stretched the lead back to seven points at halftime with two baskets underneath the 2:20 mark to bring Hofstra's lead to 23-16.
Hofstra boosted its lead to eight, the largest of the game with a three-pointer by
Ana Hernandez Gil just over three minutes into the half. The Lady Bears clawed back with a 10-2 run, including seven unanswered points, to tie the contest at 30 with 1:54 to play in the quarter. Kalin continued her strong performance, converting on a three-point play under one minute later to maintain the Pride's advantage, 33-30, after three periods.
The Pride blew the game open in the fourth, opening the period with a 6-2 run with a layup by
Shawn Mills at the 5:57 mark, giving Hofstra a 39-32 lead. After Morgan State hit a lay-up 1:07 later to close the gap to 39-34, Kalin led a 12-3 Pride run over the last 3:54 to take a 51-37 advantage following Hernandez Gil's three-pointer with 35 seconds to play. Kalin had six points in the run.
Hofstra returns to action on Saturday, December 7 when the Pride travel to Connecticut to face the Fairfield Stags at 2 p.m.
Notes:
- Wednesday's contest was the third meeting between Hofstra and Morgan State but the first since 1981. The series now stands at 2-1 in favor of the Lady Bears.
-It was the first time this season that Hofstra held an opponent to under 40 points
- Kalin led the Pride in scoring for the third time this season and the eighth time in her career. She also led the team in rebounds for the first time this year.
-Hofstra limited Morgan State to a season-low 26 rebounds
- Hofstra is 2-0 when holding opponents under 50 points this season
