ATH: Hofstra Best Of The Decade - #7 Alex Masai (Men's Cross Country)

12/20/2019 4:30:00 PM

While there have been many outstanding runners in the history of Hofstra Cross Country, none has had the impact of Alex Masai, who came to Hofstra in January 2018. In his first semester with the Pride, Masai showed what was to come when he won the 5,000-meter run at the prestigious 2018 Penn Relays in a time of 14:00.07.

That fall, Masai competed in his first collegiate cross country season, running in three meets and winning two titles. His debut in the Stony Brook Wolfie Invitational was impressive but his victory in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship was record-setting as the first Pride harrier to win the conference championship as well as set a new 8K school record of 24:00.70. He would place 62nd in his first 10K NCAA Regional on the snowy and muddy course in Buffalo. Masai would make a huge impression during the Pride's first season of outdoor track in 2019. He broke the school mark in the 10K to place fourth at the Bucknell Invitational and qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship prelims. He would also finish fourth among collegiate runners in the 5K race at the 2019 Penn Relays. Masai would finish 22nd in the NCAA East prelims.

Masai saved the best for his last cross country season in 2019 by winning five meet titles including the Stony Brook Wolfie Invitational for a second time, a record-setting 8K time at the Lehigh Paul Short Run, the Princeton Invitational, the CAA Championship for a second time, and-to top off his season-the 10K NCAA Northeast Regional in Buffalo in record time. He became the first Hofstra runner to qualify for the NCAA National Championship and placed 127th overall in the final meet. He was also a two-time All-CAA selection, a two-time CAA Runner of the Year winner and the 2019 Regional Runner of the Year by the USTFCCCA.
