BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Hofstra University Women's Basketball team (1-5) battled the Long Island University Sharks (1-6) in a non-conference contest, but the Sharks used a strong second half to down the Pride, 85-46 at the Steinberg Wellness Center on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore
JaKayla Brown shot 4-of-7 from the field with two free throws to tie for a team-high 10 points, while senior
Marianne Kalin also finished with 10 points while going 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Redshirt junior
Mikiyah Croskey went 3-for-5 from the floor for a season-high seven points while redshirt junior guard
Ana Hernandez Gil and freshman
Sorelle Ineza chipped in five points for the Pride.
Senior
Sandra Karsten finished with a career-high nine rebounds to lead the Pride, including seven offensive boards. Redshirt sophomore
Jaylen Hines recorded seven rebounds as well.
It was a tight contest throughout the majority of the first half, especially during the first quarter as neither team reached a lead larger than three throughout the first 10 minutes of action. Ineza found Croskey for a two-point basket to open up the second quarter to give Hofstra a three-point lead, however LIU used three field goals and a free throw for a 7-0 run to give the Sharks a four-point advantage at the 6:28 mark in the second period. Hofstra went 6-of-8 from the free throw line with a jump shot by Brown during the remainder of the quarter, although LIU held an eight-point edge at the halfway point. Midway through, Brown and Kalin led Hofstra with eight points each, while Ineza and Croskey added five points apiece.
The Sharks came out of the locker room strong, using a 14-4 run over the Pride to pull away to a 48-30 advantage with 5:06 left in the third. LIU remained in control through the fourth quarter as the Sharks earned the victory.
Hofstra will look to turn things around on Wednesday, December 4 when the Pride welcome Morgan State to the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
