WBB: Hofstra’s Second Half Rally Falls Short Against Howard

Hempstead, NY –  Sophomore Jaylen Hines grabbed her first career double-double and led four Pride players in double-figures with 17 points 13 rebounds, but the Hofstra University Women's Basketball team dropped a non-conference contest, 73-64, to the Howard Bison at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex Sunday night.

The Pride slip to 1-4 on the season while the Bison improve to 4-2 with their third-straight victory.

In addition to Hines double-double, Hofstra received 13 points from sophomore JaKayla Brown and freshman Sorelle Ineza in addition to 11 points from senior Ana Hernandez Gil. Ineza also dished out a career-high nine assists.

Sarah Edmond netted a double double for the Bison (18 points, 10 rebounds), while Jayla Thornton scored 16 points and Ayonna WIlliams added 15 points.

The Bison came out hot, scoring 10 of the first 12 points to take an eight-point lead on Williams' jumper at the 6:53 mark. Hofstra then chipped away and outscored Howard, 11-7 over the next 4:52 to close to within four at 17-13 on two free throws by Hines. Williams hit a three-pointer and a lay-up in the final 1:30 to give Howard a 22-13 lead after one quarter.

Howard opened the second quarter on a 13-6 run over the first 4:30 behind four points from Thorpe and three more from Williams to boost its lead to 35-19. Shortly after, the Pride went on a run of its own, outscoring the Bison, 15-5 over the remainder of the period, with Hines scoring six and Hernandez Gil adding five in the spurt to close the gap within six at 40-34 at the end of the half. Hines had 13 first half points for Hofstra while Williams had 11 and Edmond added 10 for Howard.

Howard went on another run in the third quarter, outscoring the Pride 12-6 over the first 5:38 with Fort-Davis' lay-up extending the Bison's lead to 12 for the second time in the period, 52-40. The Pride roared back, however, scoring 11 of the game's next 13 points in the period to close to within three at 54-51 at the end of three. Hofstra scored the final eight points in the final 2:35 with Ineza popping for four in the run and 10 in the quarter.

Hofstra extended its spurt to 11-0 just 35 seconds into the fourth quarter on Hernandez Gil's three-pointer that tied the game at 54-all. The Bison went on to out-score the Pride, 6-3 over the next 2:07 to take a 60-57 lead after Edmond's lay-up. Hofstra answered with a free throw by Brown and a three-pointer by Ineza to give the Pride its first lead of the game at 61-60 with 7:02 to play. Howard answered with a lay-up by Williams and two free throws by Fort-Davis to mark 64-61 lead.

After Hofstra closed to within one twice in the final five minutes, the latest at 64-63 after a Hines lay-up with 4:38 to play, Howard closed out the game on a 9-1 run to boost the final score to 73-64.

Hofstra returns to action on Saturday, November 30 when the Pride travel to Brooklyn to face the LIU Sharks at 2 p.m.
