FH: Hofstra Blanks Merrimack As Warfel Scores Twice

Hempstead, NY – Senior Madison Warfel tallied two goals and one assist and freshman goalie Merlijn van der Vegt recorded her first collegiate shutout to lead the Hofstra Pride to a 4-0 victory over the Merrimack Warriors at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Hofstra, which has won five of their last seven games, improved to 5-6 on the year. Merrimack, which had its two-game winning streak snapped, falls to 2-7 overall.

The Pride got on the board with 2:51 to play in the first quarter as sophomores Cami Larsson and Djuna Slort worked the give-and-go perfectly with Larsson notching her sixth goal of the year and a 1-0 advantage. After a scoreless second quarter, Warfel scored the first of her back-to-back goals, weaving through the Merrimack defense and beating Warrior goalie Katharina Ohmen (11 saves) for her fourth goal of the year.

Hofstra added two in the fourth quarter as Warfel picked up a loose ball on the goal line following a Merrimack defensive save on a shot by Larsson and put the ball in the goal for her second of the game and fifth of the year at the 54:39 mark. The Pride put an exclamation mark on the victory with a goal off a penalty corner with 32 seconds to play as Slort fired a low shot into the goal with Warfel, the stopper, and junior Frankie O'Brien, the inserter, picking up assists.

Hofstra outshot the Warriors, 22-4 including 12-1 in the second half. Pride goalie Merlijn van der Vegt needed only to make a third quarter save to post her first shutout. Hofstra also had seven penalty corners to Merrimack's three.

Hofstra will return to action next weekend when the Pride have Colonial Athletic Association games at William and Mary on Friday, October 11 and at James Madison on Sunday, October 13.
