MSOC: Hofstra Tripped Up By UNCW In Overtime

Hempstead, NY - Mark Lindstrom scored 5:08 into the first overtime to give UNCW a 3-2 win over Hofstra Saturday afternoon in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The Seahawks erased 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to send the game to overtime.

Hofstra, which was ranked seventh in the latest United Soccer Coaches Atlantic Region Poll, slipped to 5-5 on the season overall and 2-2 in CAA play. The Seahawks, ranked fifth in the same poll, evened their mark at 5-5-1 overall and 3-0-1 in league action.

The Pride opened the scoring at 20:28 as Lennart Seufert made a run with the ball of the left side and dumped a pass to Adam Savill near the left corner. Savill delivered a cross that Matthew Vowinkel got a right foot on for the goal. But UNCW would tie the score just before halftime as Athit Berg's service to the far post was headed in by Phillip Goodrum at 41:30.

Hofstra opened the second half strong and at the 52:49 mark, Storm Strongin gave the Pride the 2-1 lead as he left-footed a loose ball in following a flurry of headers by the UNCW defense in an attempt to clear the ball out of the goal area.

The Seahawks would get the equalizer at 78:48 when Goodrum found Cannon Tootle and the freshman's shot from the right side went across the goal mouth into the left corner for his first career goal. Neither team would score in regulation.

In the overtime, UNCW put the pressure on the Pride and forced a corner kick. Danny Reynolds delivered a high kick that the 6-3 Lindstrom headed past Hofstra keeper Alex Ashton for the win.

Hofstra is back in action Tuesday night at Albany. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
