FH: Hofstra Gets Tripped Up By Drexel On A Third Quarter Goal

Hempstead, NY –Pride goalie Merlijn van der Vegt made four saves but Drexel freshman Isabel Jacobs scored the game's only goal as the Dragons of Drexel defeated Hofstra, 1-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Friday evening.

The victory snaps a three-game losing skid for the Dragons, who improve to 2-7 on the season and 1-0 in the CAA. Hofstra falls to 4-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

In a defensive battle between the circles, the two teams combined for four shots through the first two quarters with the Dragons posting three of the four shots.

But after halftime, each team came out firing and taking three shots each during the third quarter. The scoreless deadlock was broken with 3:59 to play in the third quarter when Jacobs took the ball outside the circle, ran down the middle of the field and beat van der Vegt low for her first goal of the season.

The Dragons kept the pressure on the Pride defense in the fourth quarter, forcing van der Vegt to make three saves. But the Pride couldn't put the pressure on Drexel for the equalizer.

The Pride return to action on Sunday, October 6 when Hofstra entertains Merrimack at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Game time is noon.
