FH: Hofstra Scores Three In The Second Half To Top LIU

Hempstead, NY – Djuna Slort, Sydney LeGuillow and Madison Warfel all scored second half goals to erase a 1-0 halftime deficit and lead the Hofstra Pride to a 3-1 victory over the LIU Sharks at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Saturday afternoon.

After a scoreless first quarter, LIU (5-7) got on the board first with 2:38 to play in the half as Sammy Bell scored her seventh goal of the year off a pass from Taylor Brodsky for a 1-0 advantage. The Sharks outshot the Pride, 7-3 in the first half and had five penalty corners. Hofstra goalie Merlijn van der Vegt made four of her nine saves in the contest during the first 30 minutes.

The Pride tied the game at 1-1 with 2:42 to play in the third quarter off a penalty corner with Slort getting her second goal of the year with senior Madison Warfel and sophomore Mercy Jasterzenski assisting.

Hofstra (6-8) tallied the go-ahead goal just 2:16 into the fourth quarter as freshman Sydney LeGuillow knocked in a pass from graduate-student Valerie Vogels in front of the goal. It was LeGuillow's first collegiate goal.

Senior Madison Warfel gave the Pride some breathing room just four minutes later when she notched her sixth goal of the year on a blast from just inside the circle.

Hofstra returns to action on Sunday, October 20 when the Pride host the Broncs of Rider in a non-conference game at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m.
