FH: Van Der Vegt Makes Nine Saves But Hofstra Falls At James Madison

Harrisonburg, VA – Pride freshman Merlijn van der Vegt recorded nine saves but Ongeziwe Mali tallied two goals and Megan Guzzardi added a goal and an assist to lead the Dukes of James Madison to a 4-0 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Hofstra at the JMU Field Hockey Complex Sunday afternoon.
 
The Dukes scored once in the second quarter, twice in the third, and once in the fourth quarter to record their second consecutive win to improve to 6-7 overall and 2-1 in the CAA. Hofstra, which dropped its second straight loss, falls to 5-8 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

After a scoreless first quarter, JMU opened the scoring with 2:59 to play in the second as Mali notched her first of the season for a 1-0 advantage. The Dukes added two goals in the final five minutes of the third quarter as Mali scored off a pass from Guzzardi with 4:50 to play, and Guzzardi scored with 35 seconds to play in the quarter, off a penalty corner, with Cassie Hunter and Rachel Yeager picking up assists. Courtney Lynch closed out the scoring with 3:31 to play in the fourth quarter with Miranda Rigg picking up the assist.

Van der Vegt tallied eight of her nine saves in the second half split evenly over the third and fourth quarters. Pride junior Frankie O'Brien added a defensive save in the second quarter to keep the game scoreless at the time. Hofstra sophomore Cami Larsson took two shots for the Pride.

Hofstra returns home to the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium for two non-conference games next weekend as the Pride will face LIU on Saturday, October 19 at 1 p.m. before hosting the Broncs of Rider on Sunday, October 20 at 1 p.m.


Notes:
- Hofstra now trails JMU in the all-time series, 15-5.
- The Pride was outshot in the contest, 16-2.
- Hofstra took just two penalty corners while the Dukes took 16.
- Hofstra goalie Merlijn van der Vegt has recorded seven or more saves in four games this season.
