MSOC: Hofstra Rallies To Defeat LIU

Hempstead, NY - Adam Savill's goal off a corner kick in the 79th minute snapped a 1-1 tie and gave Hofstra a 2-1 victory over local rival Long Island University Tuesday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

Hofstra improved to 5-4 on the season with the win. The Sharks slipped to 4-5 with the loss.

Long Island took a 1-0 lead at the half courtesy of a final minute goal from Atha Coutroumpas. The LIU midfielder blasted a free kick into the upper right corner from approximately 22-yards out.

The Pride would get the equalizer in the 72nd minute as Hendrik Hebbeker turned in an great individual effort after a pass from Petter Soelberg, dribbling in from the left side through several defenders before getting his left-footed shot past LIU keeper Matias Pesallaccia.

In the 74th minute the Sharks were issued a yellow card and the Pride was able to take advantage of the extra man opportunity in the 79th minute. After earning a corner, Savill drove a ball that bent towards the near post. A charging George O'Malley provided a screen and the ball got past Pesallaccia for the game-winner.

Alex Ashton had four saves in goal while Pesallaccia also had four saves for the Sharks.

Hofstra is back in action Saturday at 12 p.m. when it hosts UNCW in a Colonial Athletic Association contest.
