WBB: Fourth Quarter Rally Lifts Elon Past Hofstra

Hempstead, NY – Boogie Brozoski, Ana Hernandez Gil, and E'Lexus Davis each scored in double figures for Hofstra, but Elon pulled away in the fourth quarter to post a 77-64 Colonial Athletic Association victory Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Elon outscored the Pride, 21-12 in the fourth quarter.

Hofstra slipped to 6-8 on the season and 0-2 in the CAA with the loss. Elon snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 6-7 overall and 1-1 in league play.

Brozoski finished with 15 points on the day with Hernandez Gil adding 14. Davis had a season-high 13 points and added five rebounds and a career-best five steals in the game. Sica Cuzic had five points and a team-best six rebounds for the Pride as well.

The Phoenix scored the first four points of the game before the Pride responded with five unanswered including a three-pointer from Hernandez Gil that gave Hofstra a 5-4 lead. After Elon scored another four points to go up, 8-5, Hernandez Gil drained her second long-distance shot to tie the score with 6:24 on the clock. Elon would once again score four consecutive points to take a 12-8 lead with 4:47 to go. Hofstra would score the next five points, taking a 13-12 lead on Vanerlie Valcourt's jumper in the paint with 39 seconds on the clock. But Elon would get the last basket of the quarter as Emily Maupin gave the Phoenix a 14-13 lead with nine ticks left.

After Elon scored the first points of the second quarter, Hernandez Gil tied the game at 16 with her third three-pointer. Trailing 18-16, Cuzic nailed a three-pointer and Davis followed with a layup to put the Pride up 21-18 with 7:35 remaining. Elon tied the score at 23 with 4:59 to go on Jaylin Powell's three-pointer but that was short-lived as Davis knocked down a three-ball of her own on Hofstra's next possession to give the Pride a 26-23 edge. But Elon would outscore the Pride, 15-8, the rest of the way to take a 38-34 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Elon opened the third quarter with a 13-2 run to extend its lead to 51-36. Hofstra answered with an 11-0 run over the next 2:44 to get within four, 51-47, with 3:20 remaining. Hernandez Gil started the spurt with a three-pointer, Davis had a layup, Brozoski added two jumpers and Mikiyah Croskey closed out the spurt with a pair of free throws. A three-point play from Brozoski made it a one-point game, 53-52, in favor of Elon with 2:03 to play. But Powell gave the Phoenix some breathing room with a three-pointer on Elon's next trip to make it 56-52 and neither team would score again in the quarter.

The Phoenix started strong once again in the fourth quarter, scoring the first five points to take a 61-52 lead with 7:56 to go on a three-pointer from Micaela Ryan. After a Brozoski basket quelled the spurt, Ryan answered with a three-pointer to put the Phoenix up by 10, 64-54, with 6:16 to go. Hofstra would get as close as eight on three occasions, the last at 69-61 with 2:54 to play on Brozoski's three-pointer.
