Hempstead, NY -
Boogie Brozoski scored a career-high 34 points as Hofstra placed three players in double figures and held Northeastern, the top scoring team in the Colonial Athletic Association (69.5 ppg), below its average in a 78-61 victory Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Pride.
Hofstra moves to 7-12 overall and 1-6 in the CAA with the win, while Northeastern, which has been ranked or receiving votes in the Mid-Major Poll for the past 11 weeks and is ranked 53rd in the latest NCAA RPI, fell to 13-5 overall and 3-4 in the CAA.
Brozoski's 34 points led all scorers and tied for ninth place for the most points in a single game in Hofstra Women's basketball history. She is the first Pride player to post a 30-point game since Kelly Loftus in 2015 versus James Madison. It was also the most points for a Pride player since All-American Shante Evans poured in 36 at William & Mary in 2011.
Ana Hernandez Gil added 15 points with three three-pointers while
Marianne Kalin had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
E'Lexus Davis had nine points in the contest to go along with six rebounds and five assists.
Caria Reynolds added eight points on 4-5 shooting in just seven minutes of action.
Hofstra had a strong first quarter, limiting Northeastern to just 12 points, and held a 18-12 advantage after the opening 10 minutes. The Pride trailed just once in the quarter, 3-0, after Jess Genco opened the scoring before a three-pointer from Davis and a layup from Kalin put the Pride up by two. After Northeastern tied the score at 7 with 6:16 to play, the Pride scored 11 of the final 16 points of the period, including the last four to grab the six-point advantage.
The Pride stayed hot in the second quarter, scoring eight of the first 10 points to open a 26-14 lead following a three-pointer from Brozoski with 7:25 on the clock. The Huskies would get as close as eight on three occasions, but Hofstra shot 73-percent (8-11) and closed the period on a 6-2 run to take a 39-27 lead at halftime. Brozoski scored nine points in the quarter while Reynolds and Davis had four points each.
Hofstra not only maintained its lead in the third quarter but built on it to hold a 62-41 edge after 30 minutes of action. Brozoski's three-pointer gave Hofstra a 15-point lead, 44-29, with 6:35 to play and Hernandez Gil followed with a pair of free throws to make it a 17-point game with 5:40 to play. Hofstra would not let up and went ahead by 19, 48-29, after a steal and fast break layup from Davis with 5:02 remaining in the third. Hernandez Gil capped a 12-0 run with a three-pointer that put Hofstra up by a count of 51-29 with 4:01 remaining. The junior guard was the offensive catalyst in the quarter as she poured in 11 points with three three-pointers.
The fourth quarter saw Northeastern get within 16, 62-46, after Stella Clark scored the first five points of the stanza. But Hofstra used a 6-2 run, with Brozoski scoring all six points, to go back up by 20, 68-48, with 6:38 to play. The Huskies responded with a run of their own, 12-2, to make it 70-60 with 1:37 to go on a Genco jumper. But Northeastern missed its final six shots and the Pride hit their free throws down the stretch to squash any thoughts of a comeback. Â
Clark scored 14 points to lead the Huskies while Genco added 12 points and Gabby Giacone chipped in with 10.
Hofstra is back in action Friday, February 1, when it starts a two-game road trip at UNCW. Game time is set for 7 p.m. The Pride concludes the trip with a 2 p.m. game Sunday at Charleston. Â
