Hempstead, NY - Drexel pulled away from Hofstra in the second quarter and posted a 61-49 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Pride Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The Dragons outscored the Pride by 10 in the second quarter to open a 13-point halftime advantage and Hofstra was unable to erase the deficit during the second half despite outscoring the Dragons, 19-13 during the final quarter.
Hofstra fell to 6-12 on the season and 0-6 in the CAA. Drexel won for the third straight game and improved to 11-5 overall and 3-2 in league play.
A low scoring first quarter saw Drexel hold an 11-8 lead. Hofstra pulled to within one, 9-8, on a three-pointer from
Sandra Karsten with 42 seconds left but Niki Metzel's jumper as the shot clock expired on Drexel's gave the Dragons the three-point advantage after the opening 10 minutes.
Hofstra scored the first basket of the second quarter, on a layup from
Jaylen Hines, before Drexel went on a 9-0 run to turn an 11-10 lead to a 20-10 advantage with 5:53 to go in the quarter. Aubree Brown scored four points for Drexel in the run. After Karsten stopped the Drexel run with a baseline jumper, Drexel responded with four more unanswered points for a 24-12 lead.
E'Lexus Davis scored the final five points of the quarter for the Pride as Drexel took a 30-17 lead into halftime.
The third quarter saw Drexel extend the lead to as many as 20, 48-28, with a minute to play before settling for an 18-point advantage at the end of 30 minutes.
Boogie Brozoski had five of the Pride's 13 points in the quarter.
Drexel would extend to a 21-point lead early in the fourth quarter. The Pride would cut the deficit to 15, 55-40, on Brozoski's three-pointer with 6:04 on the clock. Drexel would go scoreless for more than four minutes, but Hofstra could not capitalize. Hofstra would get within 12 after an
Ana Hernandez Gil three-pointer with 2:04 and then a pair of free throws from Hines made it a 10-point game, 57-47, with 1:23 on the clock. But that was as close as Hofstra would get.
Hofstra was led by Davis with 11 points. Brozoski and Hines had eight points each while Karsten matched her season-high with seven points. Brozoski's eight rebounds matched her career high and led all rebounders. The senior guard also added five assists.
Bailey Greenberg had a game-high 13 points for Drexel and led the Dragons with seven rebounds. Hannah Nihill posted 12 points off the bench while Brown had 10 points.
